The Festival will take place from the 11th to the 18th of November 2017 in the towns of Poggibonsi and San Gimignano (Siena, Italy).

Competition - Sections
— International competition (24th edition)
This is the historical section of the Festival, for which short fiction films, documentaries, docu-fiction films and cartoons can be presented. There is no set theme and it is possible to submit shorts in any language, as long as they are subtitled in English or Italian, having a maximum duration of 15' (fifteen minutes).

— VisionArt, visual arts in motion (10th edition)

The section is reserved for works of video art, digital experimentation, computer animation, etc. The short films can be enrolled optionally in three different subcategories: White, Black or Neutral. The works selected will be included in an exhibition within the 2017 Festival and they will be judged by a panel of experts on contemporary artistic languages. This section won’t see prize money awarded but the screening of finalists in an exclusive exhibition during the Festival and a special mention for the best in each single subcategory. The maximum duration of the short films has to be 15 minutes and they can be presented in any language, as long as they are subtitled in Italian or English.

— Special Section “Food and Water” (3rd edition)
The section is created in collaboration with the University of Siena and it is dedicated to all international short fiction or documentary films on the theme of “Food and Water and environmental sustainability". Works submitted in this section will be judged by a dedicated panel. The award ceremony will take place in Spring 2018.
Short films will be admitted in any language, as long as they are subtitled in Italian or English and have a maximum duration of 15 minutes.

- “ShortSight” Section (1st edition)
An open theme section dedicated to short films (maximum duration of 15 minutes) directed by authors resident in Tuscany. In this category, a special mention will be assigned by a specific jury of students of the schools of the Val d’Elsa.

How to submit
It is possible to register a work for Visionaria through the free platform FilmFreeway, which can be found at the following link: The registration will only be valid if all the fields on FilmFreeway are filled in. The organisation may request at any moment a copy of the files in MP4, H264, HD 1280x720 or 1920x1080, through a hyperlink from a space belonging to the author (directly in HD on FilmFreeway, Dropbox, Vimeo etc.)
The payment of a participation fee is expected, as specified on FilmFreeway.

Participation to the XXIV edition of the Visionaria Film Festival is open to short films from every part of the world and in every language, as long as they are subtitled in Italian or in English.
The videos submitted to the sections of the Competition must have a maximum duration of 15 (fifteen) minutes, including the credits, otherwise, they will be disqualified.
A Selection Committee will select the artworks and the Art Committee will shortlist the finalists at their own unquestionable judgement.
The shortlisted Art Works will be then judged by the Visionaria Judgement Panel and then opened to the vote of the Public (Gran Visionario Prize)

The Visionaria Judging Panel may, at its discretion and in agreement with the Selection Committee, decide not to assign awards or to assign special awards.
The VisionArt section will be selected by a Committee of Contemporary Art experts.
Selected shorts will be part of an exhibition which will be open for the whole duration of the Festival. The special mention for the best VisionArt work will be awarded by a Panel of students of the international Siena Art Institute contemporary art school.
Results of selections for all sections of the Festival will be announced on the website
The winners will be notified via e-mail.

I've never attended Visionaria but it has an excellent reputation as a long-standing event that supports daring video art and experimental film. Yes, there was a flub in 2015 where all entries received an automated message via FilmFreeway that they were accepted, but, as a fellow programmer who uses FilmFreeway, I blame that on FF's default settings, which set out automailers on your "notification date", even if you don't want it to. Getting rejected by a film festival is never a great feeling, particularly after thinking you *were* accepted (I myself received one of the mistaken emails), but people really ought to lighten up on these guys in the ratings here. No one deserves a 1-star rating for an honest mistake.

Visionary accidentally accepted every film that was submitted to them. That's fine. It was an accident, and they're only human. The issue is that they never informed the filmmakers of this issue. They posted the accepted films to their Facebook, which is how I and many other filmmakers found out about the issue. And they have also apologized repeatedly and profusely to those who raised issues on their Facebook page, which I, and I'm sure many other filmmakers, appreciated. However I'm sure that there are still many filmmakers out there who have no idea their film was not accepted to the fest. There is really no excuse for them not communicating this to the filmmakers.

I do think that many filmmakers have been unreasonably harsh on them. But, with that being said, it feels like it would have been relatively simple to send out an e-mail letting everyone know what had happened. Problem solved.

    Response from festival:

    Dear Margaret,
I personally responded to all directors who have written to ask for explanations.
We were wrong and I apologize to everyone.
But Can not send an email to 3830 subscribers in competition.
In addition, many have written at Visionaria even after a year from the Festival, although FilmFreeway had sent their communications immediately after the selections.
The relationship is to be ambivalent: from the festival to the authors but also vice versa.
That said, I still deeply apologize to you and others.
I can assure that in the future no longer commit the same mistake.

I wonder if this is a fake festival? Communication with contributors is extremely poor as other reviewers have noted.

    Response from festival:

    Dear Author,
unfortunately there was a misunderstanding on FilmFreeway.
We wrote "Accepted" to all films whose duration was less than 16 minutes, as written on the Regulation, and "Not Accepted" to courts that exceeded the timing.
We used the red flag for the finalists, but we had not realized that "Accepted" must written only about the finalists.
We deeply apologize for the misunderstanding, we received almost 4,000 films and the work was really very challenging.
However, you can see the list of finalists and winners on our site
    Sorry again
