What is a Digital Cinema Package?

A DCP, or Digital Cinema Package, is the industry-standard digital format used for distributing and projecting films in a theatrical setting, and contains a collection of different files, including image (JPEG 2000), audio (WAV), and metadata assets such as an asset map, composition playlist, and packing list. A DCP is designed for theatrical projection, combining these files to ensure smooth playback in a cinema setting.

Are Digital Cinema Packages Necessary?

A DCP is generally required for theatrical screenings or if specifically requested by a film festival. However, if your film is only intended for online viewing, a DCP is likely not required. When in doubt, consult the festival's official Rules & Terms or your film's acceptance email for clarification.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why would I order a DCP through FilmFreeway?

If you do need a DCP, ordering through FilmFreeway gives you a simple way to handle the process in one place. Instead of figuring out the technical details on your own, you can get a festival-ready deliverable with less stress and more confidence within a platform that you already trust.

What will I get?

You'll receive a cinema-ready DCP created to industry standards for theatrical playback and festival screening. It is built to work with professional cinema projection systems and is powered by Cinesend, a provider trusted in cinema delivery workflows.

Is this for first-time filmmakers?

Yes. If this is your first time hearing about DCP, you're not alone. Many filmmakers only learn about it when a festival or theatre asks for one. This page is here to help you understand what it is and whether it applies to your film.

Is this useful if I already know what a DCP is?

Yes. If you're already familiar with DCP and simply need a fast, reliable way to order one, this option is designed to make the process more convenient.

What if I'm still not sure?

That's completely fine. Start with your festival's screening instructions. If a DCP is required, you can return to the DCP File section at any time to get started.

How much does it cost?

DCP Encoding starts at $250, plus $5 per minute, with additional fees for captions, cropping, 4K encoding, and rush delivery.

Where is my DCP File stored and for how long?

DCP Files will be accessible within your FilmFreeway project for 1 year after encoding. We recommend that you download and store these files outside of the FilmFreeway platform for additional backup and longevity. You will receive warning emails 30, 7, and 1 day prior to link expiration.

How do I send my DCP File to a Festival I've been accepted to?

FilmFreeway provides software to help you create a secure and reliable DCP. After acceptance, the festival's delivery instructions should specify how and where to send your DCP, including any required file format, deadlines, or delivery method.

What if a Festival requires encrypted DCPs?

By default, DCPs created by Cinesend are unencrypted, so no KDM is needed for playback. If a festival requires an encrypted DCP, or if you need to create a DCP with multiple subtitle or caption tracks, please contact dcpsupport@cinesend.com.

Does uploading my Film impact my rights?

Uploading your film to FilmFreeway does not grant us ownership of your intellectual property. You retain all copyright and ownership rights to your work unless you separately agree to different terms with a festival, distributor, or other party.
