Comicpalooza, Texas' Largest Comic and Pop Culture Event, features more than 22,000 hours of programming, 200 guest artists on the schedule and draws more than 40,000 fans to the George R. Brown Convention Center; and for the 5th year in a row, we will be presenting an outstanding program of narrative and animated feature length and short subject independent genre films. We had a very successful year in 2016 with our packed advanced screening of Warner Bros' LIGHTS OUT which was directed by David F. Sandberg. We pre-screened the trailer for Don't Breath, had panels with amazing talent and partnered with CryptTV and S.W.A.M.P in presenting screenings and awards.

Last season, we made huge strides in serving the film community and filmmakers, but we are working even harder to improve. Due to feedback from our film community, we have begun implementing more film related events and overhauling communication protocols that will allow for greater engagement with the fest and with other filmmakers.

With the success of the Marvel and DC Cinematic Universes, and the strength of DC television, and the Netflix/Marvel collaboration, with the popularity of shows like Syfy's Face/Off (in it's 11th season!) there is absolutely no denying that the Comicpalooza Film Festival is in a prime position at the intersection of worlds of content. Therefore, we are working to create as many opportunities as we can for all creators, artists, and creatives at one of the largest and most prestigious Conventions in Texas!

Please join us for our 5th Annual Film Festival at Comicpalooza!

Wasn't able to go, but I wish there had been pictures taken of the event at the very least. I have no idea how it went because I didn't hear anything back from the festival outside of an email apologizing for the lack of communication. Not worth much more than the laurel.

I was very excited to be included in this festival, especially as the lineup of Special Guests was right up my alley, but unfortunately the lack of communication from the festival staff made it impossible to have a fulfilling collaboration.

Here are some of my experiences:

-We were never given a point person to communicate with, nor were we given a contact phone number to get in touch with festival staff. All we got was a generic email address from an unknown sender. This made it virtually impossible to coordinate with the festival, especially since they never replied to questions/requests via that email.

-Despite my cast & crew being game for attending the festival (we are out-of-state), nobody ever got back to us about passes or event info -- or anything.

-The festival asked all the filmmakers if we'd be interested in participating in interviews to help promote the festival. My team was eager to help, but we never received a reply back after sending our info.

-We finally got a "tentative" schedule for our film -- just 2 days before the event -- which made it impossible to promote in a meaningful way.

-Furthermore, my film was accidentally left off the "tentative" schedule, so I had to war dial the staff via whatever social media accounts I could find so that I could rectify the problem. I finally received my first direct reply email (which was unsigned) from the festival to let me know the error had been fixed, but they ignored my other questions.

-Nobody followed up with us to let us know how the screening went or even to thank me and my team for participating. Since filmmaking is quite expensive and this festival offered no compensation or apparent networking opportunities, I felt like a thank-you note was the least the festival could manage.

The event itself seems like a lot of fun! I wish I had been able to attend -- or at the very least, get to know the festival staff via phone/email. Hopefully in the future Comicpalooza will make greater efforts to extend a warmer welcome to participating artists and improve communication.

    Response from festival:

We not only hear you, but have made sweeping changes within the con to address your concerns. We did communicate with the filmmakers and let them know what was going on.

It is important to note that the film festival is a track among many this great even offers. Last year, we acquired a partner and were ironing out coordination within the organization. Now, the process is streamlined and ready for prime time.

Please consider giving us another chance. I think you will be glad you did.
