Presented by Stella Artois

The Pile of Bones Underground Film Festival celebrates the best of independent underground short film from Canada and beyond! Tired of seeing great films overlooked, this one-night only film festival celebrates the offbeat and unique productions that deserve more exposure. We are looking for obscure, exceptional films that are underappreciated and uniquely different.

In previous years, some films that have premiered at our fest have been invited to screen at our sister festival Videodrunk, as well as to other film festivals across Canada and the USA, picking up awards and accolades along the way.

Pile of Bones proudly celebrates bizarre and inventive creations, and we love introducing new audiences to undiscovered underground films! (Check out our state-of-the-art website for previous year's programs and winners.)

We accept independent films of any genre which are less than 30 minutes in length.

Pile of Bones is a non-competitive festival. We do, however, pay screening fees based on IMAA fee schedules and also offer the insanely coveted “Top of the Pile" audience choice award!

The "Short Films" category is open to any independent short film made in Canada or made by a Canadian (preferably both).

The "International Shorts" category is open to filmmakers from outside of Canada. The festival screens a handful of international submissions each year.

Films must be less than 30 minutes in length and have not had a public screening in Regina, Saskatchewan.

All genres will be considered, but we prefer films that are not freely available online (YouTube, Vimeo, etc.).

Films must have been made within the last 2 years, give or take.

Subtitles for non-English films are at the discretion of the filmmaker.

Films will be selected by a jury panel of independent filmmakers.

Selected films must provide the festival with a digital copy of the film in either .mp4 or .mov format.

I've attended this festival for the past two years and it is one of my favorites. The organizers are really friendly, which is no surprise when you look at the films they choose. They magically strike a balance between very challenging formal films and films with whimsical senses of humour, often with both attributes in the same film! It is tight and fun. Everyone has a good time, from cinefiles to newcomers.

A fun experience! I love seeing how an audience responds to my stuff, especially if the crowed is as ready for something different like this one was. The other films were really unique and entertaining.

We were delighted that our short "Restricted Vision" was selected for Pile Of Bones. Due to the old geography/finance conundrum, we were unable to attend, but communication was great, pics from the festival show a full auditorium, we were sent a couple of programmes, and we got a screening fee. Very happy indeed.

    Response from festival:

Awesome, thanks guys! We were pleased to kick off the festival with "Restricted Vision" and you were definitely there in spirit!
