Founded by LUNA Bar in 2001, LUNAFEST has a long history of advocating for social change by amplifying the stories of women and gender nonconforming individuals.

As society continues to hit inflection points on many levels, our 2023 LUNAFEST program will investigate and reimagine power structures as LUNA remains committed to playing our part in creating a more equitable world.

For over twenty years, LUNA has utilized the power of film and fundraising to push forward progress by shining a spotlight on stories that dare to break through societal constructs while providing a platform for filmmakers who are determined to elevate the voices of under-represented and marginalized communities and causes.

Each season, we’ve celebrated the rich diversity that exists across gender, sexual orientation, race, ethnicity, body type, age, ability, and religion. Our end goal is always to program films that will spark conversation and connection, challenge perceptions, and inspire audiences to reassess the part they play in making the world a better and more equitable place, where everyone has the potential to thrive.

For the past 20+ years, LUNA has been committed to advocating and championing for change. This bold and unapologetic attitude fueled us to create LUNAFEST, the world’s first all-women traveling film festival.

Our unique film program travels virtually and in person to over 200 locations each season creating impact through dollars raised and awareness built toward some of the most pressing issues facing society today.

LUNAFEST annually showcases the work of 6-10 talented women and gender nonconforming filmmakers. We’ve opened opportunities for more than 180 filmmakers since 2001 and raised over $6.5 million while working with more than 1,600 nonprofits – with 100% of the net proceeds of each event donated directly to nonprofit causes.

About Our Partner:
In 2020, LUNA went a step further and co-produced three short films with our partner, Chicken & Egg Pictures. This nonprofit provides mentorship and critical financial support to women and gender nonconforming nonfiction filmmakers.

Please note: Your film submission fee is donated directly to our partner Chicken & Egg Pictures, which supports women nonfiction filmmakers whose artful and innovative storytelling catalyzes social change. The organization envisions a world in which women and gender nonconforming filmmakers, representing a range of experiences and backgrounds, are fully supported to realize their artistic goals, build sustainable careers, and achieve parity in all areas of the film industry.

LUNAFEST directors often range from journalists to artists, activists, and change agents – coming from all walks of life, including young film school graduates testing the waters and industry veterans testing boundaries.

The director of each selected film will receive an award of $5000.00. Winning films will be screened by nonprofit organizations to audiences at more than 200 locations across North America, both in person and virtually. Each event will serve as a vehicle for raising awareness and funds for important causes.
