Director Biography - Dustin Jones, Emma Pettinga

After receiving an honorable discharge in 2011, Dustin attended the University of Colorado, where he received a B.S. in journalism. ***** Winners of Best in Horror is " House Hunting" *****
Hunters sneak inside our homes to steal our most private moments and anonymously post the video for all the world to see.
Director Biography - Patrick Andrew Higgins
Patrick Andrew Higgins began studying all aspects of film production at a very young age, starting with making short films and putting on plays during kindergarten. Over the years he honed the powerful visual style which he brings to all his projects, as well as his formidable storytelling ability.
Patrick has worked in both the studio and independent movie world, helming several feature length films including the psychological thriller Sickness House. As a director, his dark comedy feature film Under the Gun earned the "Official Selection" at the New York Independent Film Festival in Los Angeles and "Best Feature Length Comedy" at the MiniDV Festival. As a writer, he has worked for many independent feature film companies, including NuLight Productions and Mosaic Films. He also adapted The Book of Skulls for the SyFy network.
With bold and unique storytelling coupled with an incredible compelling vision, Patrick brings a dramatic and phonological realism to a genre that often lacks that level of care and depth. Playing off established horror archetypes, Patrick is able to bring a new, edgy vision to the horror world while maintaining textured and interesting characters.
***** Winners of Best in Musical "The Rite of Saturn" *****
The Rite of Saturn is the beginning of a cycle of seven individual Planetary Rites that collectively comprise The Rites of Eleusis. Written and performed by occultist Aleister Crowley, these Rites scandalized the city of London in the fall of 1910, contributing to Crowley’s infamous reputation as The Wickedest Man in the World.
This musical adaptation of The Rite of Saturn incorporates the esoteric themes and culturally challenging world views presented by Crowley into a format that lends itself to the grandiose and nuanced nature of these plays. The creative team at Eleusyve Productions deftly incorporates the complete and unedited dialog of this ritual drama into a rock opera featuring all original music and staging that further illuminates the dramatic narrative.
Shot over the course of several performances and edited to capture the salient points of this ambitious adaptation, this film captures the very best of the theatrical production as it was staged in September of 2018.
***** Winners of Best in Spiritual Films "The Father of Man" *****
When Boyd dies and finds himself in the great beyond, he learns that his estranged son is about to make the worst decision of his life—and only Boyd can stop him.
Director Biography - Barrett Burgin
Barrett Burgin is a graduating senior from BYU’s Media Arts department who emphasizes in writing, directing, and producing. He has written and directed a number of award-winning short films during his time in school, such as The Next Door (2016) and Out of the Ground (2017). He has also produced a number of student shorts, and is currently directing his first feature film. Burgin has a proclivity for psychological thrillers and science fiction films, but often devotes special interest to the intersectionality of religious mythos and cinema.
***** Winners of Best in Feature Film "Adamstown" *****
The movie Adamstown is based on the graphic novel by Verena Braun.
In a town out in „the West“ (shot in the flatlands of Northern Germany), animals and humans a struggling and fighting about power and influence. A bank must be built, bullets must be shot and a curse has too be broken.
Behind the scenes on the other hand, people of different cultural and religious backgrounds, refugees, people with and without disabilities, old and young were working together to crush borders and show respect.
Intercultural work, inclusiveness and human rights where the driven forces for the educational project around the movie and our message we wanted to deliver with the movie … embedded in a fantastic story with a divers (and fantastic) cast.
**** Winners of Best in Film Documentary " SAUL & RUBY'S HOLOCAUST SURVIVOR BAND" *****
Saul (94, drummer) and Ruby (90, accordion), are both Holocaust survivors and musicians with an insatiable lust for life. When we started filming them four years ago they had just formed The Holocaust Survivor Band, the first of its kind. Their dream was to one day perform their music in Poland, their homeland where they endured unimaginable trauma. Their mission then, and now, is to spread a message of world peace at a time when anti-Semitism and prejudice are growing throughout the world. Through the sharing of their music and stories, they have learned that they are also healing their own wounds while revealing their resilience.
SAUL & RUBY, TO LIFE!, is a feature documentary (80 min.) directed and produced by Tod Lending, an Oscar nominated and national Emmy winning documentary filmmaker. It is a story full of comedy and tragedy as it follows the inspiring story of these two unique and unusual men. Their musical journey begins in total obscurity, playing in residential homes for the elderly and small Jewish community organizations, to then being invited to perform at venues across the country, including a coveted performance at the Kennedy Center’s Millennium Stage.
Eventually, they make an extraordinarily emotional journey to Poland where they relive the joys of their youth and the ensuing horrors of Nazi occupied Poland. They play a dream concert before a cheering crowd of two thousand Poles of all ages, including a group of non-Jewish Poles who provided a safe haven for Jews during the war. The story ends with a very emotional scene of them playing their instruments defiantly and triumphantly on the train tracks of Auschwitz. In voice-over, Saul warns us that the racism and anti-Semitism of today must be stopped.
During the four years we filmed we witnessed the remarkable resilience of Saul and Ruby as they both lost their wives to chronic illnesses (they died within 11 days of each other). Though devastated, they continued to pursue their ambitions while mourning their painful losses.
This unique and compelling story is about having the courage to live one’s dreams, finding purpose and meaning in life, the transcendent power of music, the complex experience of aging, surviving trauma, the power of love and family, and speaking out against anti-Semitism and bigotry. We are with Saul and Ruby every step of the way as they find joy, healing and comfort through music while confronting the past, and boldly facing the mortality of their existence today.
There were several Awards handed out on February 1st, 2020 from Best in Film, Actor/Actress, The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), Animation, Screenplay, Editing, Music, Costume, Documentary, LGBTQ, Musical, Narrative Feature, Shorts and Veteran Films.
***** There were Film Buyers, Exhibitors, Executives and Production Studios in attendance for Actors, Creators, Producers and Veterans to meet and greet.
Thank you for your interest in the Midway Multicultural Music Film Festival!
