Marz Gebhardt (she/they) is a 25 year old Canadian multidisciplinary artist, filmmaker, and writer whose practice combines hand-crafted clay stop-motion, music videos, short films and documentaries, and original sound within her creative hub called Martian Mail. Their work centers fantastical and emotionally grounded narratives that explore queer and feminine identities and chosen forms of belonging through fantastical and intentionally handmade visual worlds. Working as a director, cinematographer, and screenwriter, Gebhardt produces visually distinctive music videos and short films that integrate tactile animation, narrative-based filmmaking, and her original sound design as central storytelling forces.
A defining feature of Gebhardt’s practice is the integration of hand-crafted clay figurines and stop-motion animation amidst live-action footage. These miniature and colourful environments emphasize materiality, time, and care, as each character exists as an exaggerated parallel of the inner worlds within Gebhardt's human characters. By situating tactile animation within real-world settings- often drawn from the landscapes and architecture of the Canadian Prairies- Gebhardt blurs the boundary between mythic and everyday worlds. This approach resists digital and commercial polish in favor of emotional vulnerability and purposeful imperfection.
Across mediums, Gebhardt’s work prioritizes collaboration and sustainable production methods. Their films and visual work have been presented in nine solo and group exhibitions across Canada and the United States, and have received international film festival acknowledgement for music video and short-form storytelling.
Marz Gebhardt holds an Honours Bachelor of Arts in English with a History minor from the University of Regina and an Associate Diploma in Writing for Film and Television from Toronto Film School, alongside additional professional training through screenwriting fellowship programs. They are currently still based in Canada and continue to work independently and collaboratively across film, documentary, and digital storytelling.
