I was a High School All American Swimmer by my Junior Year. The first time I boarded a plane was the Summer of 1977, with members of our team, The Brown Swim Club. We flew on a TWA 767 from Logan Airport in Boston to LAX in California and stayed at The Compass Motel in Huntington Beach and swam at Mission Viejo, where Mark Spitz's last World Record, The 100 Meter Butterfly was broken. Despite receiving a personal letter from Rhode Island Governor J. Joseph Garrahy upon admittance to Brown University, I attended Indiana University and swam for the greatest swimming Coach in history, James 'Doc' Counsilman, transferring to UMass after one year.
