The Virginia Black Film Festival is designed to highlight and elevate filmmakers and stories from throughout the African diaspora, highlighting unique perspectives and emerging voices, including student filmmakers.

VBFF 2027 will feature celebrities and network executives, with masterclasses and panels designed to expand the reach of both professional and emerging Black filmmakers and to showcase this work to distinguished Virginia audiences.

*Awards may be given in several sub-categories for each submission category.

Rules & Terms

1. FilmFreeway is the only acceptable means of submitting content to VABFF.
2. Filmmakers may submit to more than one category of competition.
3. By submitting, creator affirms that all respective copyrights and permissions to screen have been obtained.
4. VBFF is open to films with:
a. Stories the revolve around or highlight Black culture
b. Films with Black directors
c. Films with Black lead characters
5. Acceptance into VBFF is at the sole discretion of the VABFF Board and Selection Panel.

    I am honored to have had multiple films accepted for this festival over the past few years and to have won awards in the categories I submitted. The professionalism of the festival organizers is top-notch, and I found them to be friendly and enthusiastic about the films being showcase. The venue this year in Williamsburg was wonderful! The energy was great! The selection of films kept me glued to my seat. I have made this festival a staple in my calendar, even if I am attending strictly as an audience member.
