OFFICIAL JURY STATEMENT
7th Edition Neo-South Independent Film Festival

As the 7th Edition Jury, we prioritize stories that honor the ethos of Fourth Cinema, giving voice to the unrepresented across Asia. We look forward to seeing how filmmakers subvert traditional genres, using the gritty textures of Neo-Noir and the experimental tools of AI to tell urgent, deeply rooted human stories.

In Competition - Asian Focus
We evaluated films engaging our Neo-Noir theme across seven craft disciplines. Winners demonstrated exceptional command of narrative tension, visual atmosphere, and emotional authenticity. Their work advances both the genre and Asia's cinematic voice.

Out of Competition - Global Showcase
We recognized excellence beyond competitive constraints, honoring bold experimentation, technical innovation, and stories that demanded attention regardless of origin or format.

Young Rebel Award - Emerging Voices
We celebrated Malaysia's next generation. These diploma students proved that craft mastery and creative courage emerge early, and deserve immediate nurturing.

My Rebel's - AI Cinema Lab
We witnessed the future of filmmaking. These AI-generated works challenged us to reconsider authorship, aesthetics, and the very definition of cinematic storytelling.

To all participants: your courage fuels the dialogue between art and society. We are honored to amplify your voices.

ABOUT THE FESTIVAL

Welcome to the 7th Edition of the Neo-South Independent Film Festival (NSIFF).

For our seventh edition, NSIFF is evolving. We are shifting our core focus to Fourth Cinema, giving center stage to independent, indigenous, and marginalized voices from across Asia and Southeast Asia (including the rich narratives of Sabah, Sarawak, and regional native communities). We seek cinema that reclaims identity, challenges colonial frameworks, and speaks from the heart of the land and its people.

The Twist: While Fourth Cinema is our backbone, we retain our love for Neo-Noir. We highly encourage filmmakers to blend these two worlds. Stories of indigenous struggle, systemic corruption, or cultural displacement told through the atmospheric, morally complex lens of Neo-Noir will find a perfect home here.

NSIFF remains a filmmaker-first, non-profit collective dedicated to creative rebellion and solidarity. Join us in Rembau, Negeri Sembilan, for two nights of cinematic revolution.

Submit your film.

  • A well-organized and curated festival with a promising future.

Unfortunately, attendance last year was not possible due to COVID restrictions, but nevertheless, the festival team did everything in their power to connect to filmmakers and make things feel right - including live Q&A panels, screenings and excellent communication from the start. It was exciting to see a festival devoted to Neo-Noir and other niche genres, and such an honor to have my film there - among a marvelous selection of independent works from Malaysia and around the world. I look forward to participating again in future iterations - as a filmmaker and as part of the audience (hopefully, some day in person!).

Highest recommendation for any independent artist to submit their work. Neo-South festival is certain to gain more and more prominence in the years ahead.
