Festival Focus:
The Festival of Otherness provides space for authors’ voices that express their perspective on a world that could be.
Inclusion, sustainability, and youth are the transversal focus of the festival, with the aim of developing spaces that encourage critical thinking, dialogue, and community participation, while caring for the cultural and environmental context we inhabit.
The call will be open from March 16 to June 12, 2026.

Who are we calling?
We invite production companies, distributors, filmmakers, students, collectives, emerging creators, and visual artists, especially young people from Mexico and around the world, to submit their works to the 2026 national and international short film competition.

Enfoque del festival:
El Festival de Cine de la Otredad da lugar a voces propias de lxs autorxs que ponen en manifiesto su expresión sobre un mundo que puede ser.
Inclusión, sostenibilidad y juventud, es la transversalidad del enfoque del festival con el fin de desarrollar espacios que acojan la crítica, el encuentro y la participación comunitaria, cuidando del entorno cultural y ambiental que habitamos. La convocatoria estará abierta del 16 de marzo al 12 de junio de 2026.

¿A quién convocamos?
Convocamos a casas productoras, distribuidoras, cineastas, estudiantes, colectivos, realizadores emergentes y artistas visuales, especialmente jóvenes de México y del mundo entero, a inscribir sus obras a la competencia nacional e internacional de cortometraje 2026

Awards & Prizes

The awards ceremony will take place on Saturday, August 29, 2026. Winners in each category will receive:
• A surprise prize from the festival sponsors.

• An official FICOT 2026 statuette*

• Digital recognition and official laurels.

La ceremonia de premiación se realizará el sábado 29 de agosto de 2026. Los ganadores de la categoría en competencia recibirán:
· Premio sorpresa por parte de los patrocinadores del festival.

- Reconocimiento digital y laureles oficiales.

Rules & Terms

Submission guidelines:

* Registration is free for Mexican categories and will be carried out via FilmFreeway.
* All short films completed from January 2024 onwards are eligible.
* All techniques and genres are accepted.
* The short film must not exceed 20 minutes in duration.
* The short film may have been screened at other festivals.
* Works must include Spanish subtitles if the original language is different.
* Applicants must hold all exhibition rights for their work.

Process and selection:

* Submissions will be evaluated by a jury with experience in film, culture, and education
* The Official Selection will be announced on August 3, 2026, on our social media and website
* Selected works will be screened during the festival in physical venues and digital platforms
* Selected directors may participate in Q&A sessions within the framework of the festival
General conditions
By submitting, participants accept these guidelines and authorize the screening of their short film within the festival. FICOT reserves the right to program works out of competition.

All cases not covered here will be resolved by the organizing committee.

Bases de participación:

• El registro es gratuito para las categorías mexicanas y se realizara vía FilmFreeway.
• Podrán participar todos los cortometrajes realizados a partir de enero de 2024.
• Se aceptan todas las técnicas y géneros.
• El cortometraje no debe exceder de 20 minutos de duración.
• El cortometraje pudo haber sido exhibido en otros festivales.
• Las obras deberán llevar subtítulos en español si el idioma original del cortometraje es otro.
• Las personas postulantes deben poseer todos los derechos de exhibición de su obra.

Proceso y selección:

• Los trabajos serán evaluados por un jurado con trayectoria en cine, cultura y formación.
• La Selección Oficial se anunciará el 3 de agosto de 2026 en nuestras redes sociales y página web.
• Las obras seleccionadas serán exhibidas durante el festival en sedes presenciales y plataformas digitales.
• Lxs directorxs seleccionados podrán participar en sesiones de preguntas y respuestas en el marco del festival.
Condiciones Generales
Al inscribirse, lxs participantes aceptan las bases y autorizan la exhibición del cortometraje en el marco del festival. FICOT se reserva el derecho de programar obras fuera de competencia.
