Indie Short Fest is an international short film festival based in Los Angeles with monthly editions that qualify for the Annual Awards.
Besides the monthly awards and the annual event, Indie Short Fest occasionally holds special screenings and Q&As with cast and crews.

At our most recent Annual Awards showcase at Regal LA Live in Los Angeles, Indie Short Fest welcomed hundreds of attendees for screenings, filmmaker Q&A sessions, industry conversations, red carpet activities, cocktail reception, and the Awards Show celebration.
The event brought together filmmakers and guests from across the world, celebrating independent cinema through 67 films representing 23 countries, including 34 premieres.

Recent editions of the festival have welcomed acclaimed guests and industry professionals, including BAFTA-nominated actor Steven Ogg, Michael Raymond-James, horror icon Eileen Dietz, Stephen Tobolowsky, Alexa Mansour, Cynthia Gravinese, and many others.

Notable Films Previously in Competition at Indie Short Fest
Across past editions, Indie Short Fest has selected and presented several notable projects, including the Academy Award–winning live-action short "I’m Not a Robot" (Netherlands), the Oscar-shortlisted live-action shorts "Edge of Space" (USA) and "The Pearl Comb" (UK), and multiple Oscar-longlisted works across formats — including documentaries and animations "The Mortician of Manila" (Philippines), "A Tree Once Grew Here" (USA), "On/Off" (Argentina), "Pacemaker" (UK), and "Pete" (USA), as well as live-action shorts "Cognition" (UK), "Bad Survivor" (USA), "Once More, Like Rain Man" (USA), and "Satomi" (Hong Kong/Japan/USA). Other highlights include BAFTA/LA Student Film Award winner "Mum’s Hairpins" (Russia), the DGA Student Film Award winner "Mother in the Mist" (USA), the Student Academy Award–nominated "Incognito" (USA), and "One Last Last Heist" (Canada), later acquired by Sony.

Iconic Venues
From Burbank’s 1817 Film Studios to the theaters of Raleigh Studios Hollywood and on to the iconic Regal LA Live, Indie Short Fest has premiered over 550 films and welcomed more than 6,000 attendees to Los Angeles.

Indie Short Fest, one of the most relevant rising voices of the global indie film community with a focus on diversity and inclusion, is proud to count among its award winners Academy Award winners Jamie Lee Curtis, Joel Harlow, Robert Zemeckis, and Victoria Warmerdam, alongside nominees such as Jeremy Renner, Paul Giamatti, Eric Roberts, Graham Greene, and Waad Al-Kateab. The festival has also honored BAFTA, Emmy, SAG, Golden Globe, Teen Choice, Critics Choice, Grammy, and Sundance winners, including Kyra Sedgwick, Loretta Devine, Kristen Johnston, Jonathan Frakes, Isabelle Fuhrman, Brooklynn Prince, Gaby Moreno, and Masha Ko, as well as iconic talents like Chris Pine, Kevin Bacon, Danny Trejo, James Hong, Pauline Chalamet, and Stephen Tobolowsky.

MONTHLY ROUNDS
All entries are judged by a random team of invited experts from academia and film industry against a high standard of merit and a very competitive acceptance rate.

At least 3 different judges score the quality and creativity of each entry on a performance scale. The highest rated entries are nominated for the awards of the respective categories and finally are choose the winners.

All projects officially selected in each monthly round receive the Indie Short Fest official laurel and the custom certificate of achievement according to their final status in the competition.

Besides the main award for each category, it can be given also Outstanding Achievement Awards (special recognition) and Honorable Mentions.

Also, Indie Short Fest selects overall winners each round: Best Short, awarded to the strongest film overall; Best Short (Foreign-Language), designated when eligible; and two to three Awards of Excellence as additional honors.

Categories with no submissions meeting the festival requirements or the minimum score threshold will have no awards assigned. Award levels are determined by the overall evaluation and may vary depending on the quality of the submissions.

ANNUAL AWARDS
The top monthly award winners qualify for the annual awards.
Each annual event is based in an annual cycle of 12 monthly rounds.
The judging team of Indie Short Fest chose approximately 70–80 films, nominating them for Best of the Year across different genres and categories.

EVENTS DATES
The event date in FilmFreeway designates the day of the announcement of the award winners of each monthly round.
The special screenings and Q&As as well as the annual awards have a different timeline that is announced through our website and social media outlets. All submitters are always kept in loop and in advance to be able to do the preparations to attend these events.

PLEASE READ CAREFULLY

All genres are accepted with a maximum length of 60 minutes.
All short scripts should have a maximum of 60 pages.

The films must include English subtitles (unless the spoken language is English).

By submitting the film, the submitter agrees that:
1. Indie Short Fest can use trailer/teaser/film poster/stills or BTS for promotional purpose (but do not release, under any form or circumstances, the full film)
2. Entry fees are non-refundable.
3. The submitter owns all the rights to the film, meaning that the submitted work (i) does not violate or infringe any copyright, patent, privacy right, publicity right, trademark, service mark or any other personal or property right of any person or entity, that (ii) does not constitute or include a defamation of any person or entity, and that (iii) its representatives have paid and will pay in full all license fees, clearance fees, and other obligations, of any kind, arising from or associated with the exhibition of the Film at or in connection with the Festival. Also, that the submitter is duly authorized, on his own behalf and on behalf of all other persons or entities who have any ownership rights or interests (including, without limitation, intellectual property rights) in or relating to the film, to exhibit the film at the Festival.
4. The submitter cannot withdraw the submission after the official selection announcement. If submitter fails the observance of this rule, the festival has the right to proceed with any legal action at its sole discretion.

For student fees, it is mandatory the student status evidence (e.g copy of student card included in the project).

AI-Use Disclosure Requirement
Projects that have used Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools at any stage of creation — including image generation, animation, writing, sound design, or editing — must include a brief AI-Use Disclosure in the project’s cover letter or description. The disclosure should specify which AI tools were used and the extent of their use. Submissions lacking transparency regarding AI-assisted content, if applicable, may be deemed ineligible.

PUBLIC THEATRICAL SCREENINGS - TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS
For public screenings, the submitter must provide:
Primary format (preferred):
• 2K or 4K DCP (SMPTE compliant)
 – Container: Interop or SMPTE (SMPTE preferred)
 – Frame rate: 24 fps (other rates accepted if mastered properly)
 – Audio: 5.1 Surround or Stereo (5.1 preferred)
 – Aspect ratio clearly indicated
Alternative formats (if DCP is unavailable):
• 4K or 2K ProRes (ProRes 422 HQ or ProRes 4444)
• 4K or 2K H.264 (High Profile, 20–50 Mbps recommended)
 – File format: .mov or .mp4
 – Audio: Stereo or 5.1
Delivery Method:
• Secure digital transfer required (link with download enabled)
Subtitles and Accessibility:
• Films not in English must include English subtitles
• Optional subtitles/captions for accessibility encouraged
Final Specifications:
• All final screening materials must be delivered by the deadline set by the festival; late delivery may result in the film being withdrawn from the public program.
• The festival reserves the right to request new files if the materials provided are technically inadequate.
