The 2024 American Pavilion Emerging Filmmaker Showcase will be the sixteenth juried Competition for The American Pavilion. Since 1989, The American Pavilion has offered unparalleled experiences in Cannes to film students and emerging filmmakers from around the world. The Emerging Filmmaker Showcase provides an opportunity for filmmakers to have their works seen by Cannes Festival and Film Market attendees.

We accept short films and documentaries that are 25 minutes or less. 25 to 35 short films and documentaries from around the world are chosen for competition. A panel of industry judges selects winners in each category (Emerging Filmmaker Showcase, Emerging Student Showcase, and LGBTQ+ Emerging & Student Showcase). The official selections will be screened in a final competition in May at The American Pavilion during the 2024 Cannes Film Festival. Awards are given in Narrative, Documentary, and LGBTQ+ categories. Winners of each of the categories can opt-in to screen their film at a special event held at The American Library in Paris one week after the screening in Cannes. More information about the special event will be provided upon acceptance into The American Pavilion Emerging Filmmaker Showcase.

What a wonderful experience it was to screen our film BACKLOG in the Student Section of the Emerging Filmmaker Showcase.

From acceptance (a personal phone call) to our screening, it felt like Monika, Karen and everyone at the festival worked so hard to give us the most rewarding and personal experiences. And they did. They made sure to clearly communicate everything for us, especially for those on my team who do not speak French, facilitated us securing our guests' day pass badges, and advised us on how to have the best festival experience!

The panels were incredible, hosted by huge industry mogul conglomerates, as they are co-owned by some of the biggest publications.

This festival opened so many doors and opportunities to us while we were at Cannes. Not only were we able to hear the SAG Indie talks that Am Pavilion sponsors with huge filmmakers, but their big panel events, their screenings, Queer Night - which was one of the best parties we attended full of glitter and glam and fantastic music!

Our screening was photographed by talented photographer John Bernstein - and are some of our favorite photos from the event.

We were even able to walk the red carpet at the Grand Lumiere theatre six times! It was an unforgettable time and I highly encourage filmmakers to stay for as long as you can - to maximize time at the Marche du Film and befriend Producer's Network Badge attendees, as they invited our BACKLOG team to their parties that they didn't have time to attend and even helped us get into the Campari Lounge, where I got hired to direct a feature film next year. These things really do happen in Cannes, and the American Pavilion was one of our favorite place to meet people.

Thank you for including us - we can't wait to come back in future years.

Traveling overseas for a festival can be daunting, but The American Pavilion Emerging Filmmaker Showcase at Cannes ended up feeling like a warm hug. Monika Skerbelis provided excellent communication beforehand as to what to expect, which made the pilgrimage a breeze. Our team was both blown away and inspired by the groundbreaking and inspiring cadre of films. Diverse & unique. Boundless talent & rich subject matter. Films that have stayed with us in the weeks to come; engaging us in deep conversations. Attendees comfortably connected in the welcoming venue. We met some stellar creative humans and all made promises to return in the future. And return we shall!
