Founded in 2018, the WYO Film Festival (WYOFF) is a celebration of independent film where creativity and storytelling meet modern hospitality and old-west charm. Set against the stunning backdrop of the Bighorn Mountains in Sheridan, Wyoming, the festival brings together filmmakers of all experience levels and engaged audiences for a weekend of cinematic discovery and genuine connection. Each year, the WYO team curates a world-class program of independent narrative features, documentaries, and short films, cultivating a vibrant creative community rooted in the spirit of the modern West.
Held annually the first weekend in October, the WYO Film Festival transforms downtown Sheridan into a hub of art, culture, and conversation. Designed to be intentionally intimate, the entire festival experience unfolds in the heart of downtown—where everything is walkable and the energy is contagious. Screenings take place at the historic WYO Theater and nearby venues, where filmmakers and film lovers gather to share stories that inspire, challenge, and move audiences. Beyond the big screen, the festival hosts receptions, panels, and after-parties that create meaningful connections between filmmakers and attendees. From local breweries and award-winning restaurants to art galleries and live music, the town itself becomes part of the festival experience.
A cornerstone of the WYO experience is its warm, intimate atmosphere. Attendees are invited to meet filmmakers, take part in Q&As, attend receptions and panels, and connect with a community that believes film has the power to inspire and unite.
Join us in Sheridan for a weekend of storytelling, connection, and cinema in the heart of the West.
The WYO Film Festival is committed to recognizing excellence in independent filmmaking and providing meaningful support to the artists behind the work.
In partnership with our official lodging partner, the festival provides complimentary lodging for all traveling filmmakers (one room per film) and offers a limited number of travel stipends to assist with transportation costs. Additionally, all attending filmmakers receive a complimentary Filmmaker (VIP) Badge, granting access to all film screenings, official festival events, and exclusive perks throughout the weekend.
The festival also presents two Audience Choice Awards, each accompanied by a cash prize, determined by votes cast by festival attendees throughout the weekend:
Audience Choice: Feature Film - $500
Audience Choice: Short Film - $250
