The second Space Brains SciFi Film Festival, an international science fiction film festival, will take place Saturday 17th June 2023 in the beautiful coastal town of Mandurah, Western Australia.

The Space Brains SciFi Film Festival is a competition for independent science fiction filmmakers to highlight their films and talents. The festival draws particular focus on the work of regional Western Australian filmmakers to help give them a platform to speak about their projects.

At the Space Brains SciFi Film Festival event, we will present a series of workshops, science related community activities and celebrate the best science fiction films with a screening and awards gala.

Space Brains SciFi Film Festival defines science fiction as a narrative that contains an investigation into speculative science (e.g. alternate universes, social constructs, versions of reality, versions of human nature, or time travel and new or altered technology). Films submitted to Space Brains SciFi Film Festival must be adhere to this definition.

The festival values creating and bringing together community and celebrating all things science fiction.

The Space Brains SciFi Film Festival will feature on an upcoming episode of the Space Brains Podcast. Submitters will have the opportunity to feature on this podcast.

Before submitting, please carefully read the RULES & TERMS detailed below.

At the Space Brains SciFi Film Festival Event, screenings will occur in a physical theatre and awards will be presented. The awards will be a certificate for the following categories for short film (15 mins and under) and feature films (90 to 180 mins):

Best Space Brain Short Film
Best short film — Mandurah and Regional Western Australian
Best short film — Australian
Best short film — Youth/ Student
Best SciFi Music Video

All filmmakers / applicants, or entities submitting a film to the Space Brains SciFi Film Festival accept and agree to comply with the following Terms and Conditions:

1 - Space Brains SciFi Film Festival only accepts online registrations and submissions to be assessed. We accept films in any language. However, films not made in English must have English subtitles.

2 - Films submitted to Space Brains SciFi Film Festival must adhere to our definition of science fiction. Space Brains SciFi Film Festival defines science fiction as a narrative that contains an investigation into speculative science (e.g. alternate universes, social constructs, versions of reality, versions of human nature, or time travel and new or altered technology)

3 - We only accept films that have been produced during and after 2021. Films must have been completed no earlier than 1st January 2021.

4 - All submission fees are non-refundable.

5 - The “youth/student filmmaker” category entrants must be registered in a recognised film school, university, college, high school, middle school, or elementary school with proof of ID from the institution to qualify for the relevant fees. You must supply the following:
- Your Student ID;
- name of school, college, or university;
- name of your course or grade level;
- lecture or teacher and,
- email of lecturer or teacher.

6 - No feedback on submissions can be given. Rejection letters will not be sent.

7 - Films are scheduled by the Space Brains SciFi Film Festival directors and organizers. Changes to a schedule may occur at any time.

8 - Decisions of Space Brains SciFi Film Festival and Judges are final.

9 - Categories of awards may be amalgamated due to lack of submissions in one category.

10 - A digital file of the full film must be supplied to the Space Brains SciFi Film Festival for screening purposes.

11 - You warrant that you have the necessary copyrights to all promotional material, images and/or text. You grant the Space Brains SciFi Film Festival non-exclusive licence to use this material to promote and operate the Space Brains SciFi Film Festival (Space Brains website, publicity materials, advertisements, social media, and festival screenings).

12 - You warrant that you have the necessary copyrights to your film as its author and possess the required actor release forms. The submitter guarantees that all rights and releases have been legally secured, including music rights, songs etc. and the submitter releases the Space Brains SciFi Film Festival and all its members, affiliates, and partners from any legal action whatsoever to the limit of the law.
