[SET.mefree] Dance & Movement on the Screen is a nomadic micro-festival that takes place in different cities and it is curated by the cultural association VeNe (IT) and the international collective futuremellon/not yet art (IT/GR/UK). Keeping in mind the slippery definitions of dance, choreography, screen and their expanding and transgressed borders, VeNe and futuremellon/not yet art are interested in the multiple manifestations of the hybrid audio-visual and spatiotemporal form of screendance.

OPEN CALL FOR SCREENDANCE: [POSITIONING]
Positioning is a dynamic process of placing an object or a subject in space. The ending ‘-ing’ assigns to the action of positioning notions of transition.

In the era of data ‘tsunami’ we are positioned in front of digital screens that bring us into distant proximity with others. Selfies – performed actions of positioning one’s self in front of the camera –  give evidence of self-confirmation and reach instantaneously our audiences through social media. Furthermore, free cultural mobility and refugee crisis render the act of positioning relevant to that of finding a home. Considering positioning as a process between movement and stillness, what can dance and camera, with their fluctuating yet clearly situational form, offer to the understanding and awareness of positioning as a socio-political phenomenon? How does the tension between moving and positioning a camera impact visual representation and subjectivity?

Aspiring to bring social awareness, VeNe and futuremellon/not yet art welcome works that take advantage of the transportability of the camera and the body in sites of conflict or areas that need attention.

  • I wasn't able to attend, but the communication with the festival was excellent. I was able to attend Screendance: Landscapes in Venice earlier in the year and I can say that these are people who REALLY care about dance on screen. If you do, too I urge you to apply!
