🎬 Lights, camera, Newark!
Are you ready to shine a spotlight on the stories that make Newark extraordinary? The Newark Reel Stories Challenge is back — your chance to celebrate the heart, soul and creativity of our city — and win up to $500 to fuel your next project!

🎥What’s the challenge?
Create a short film no longer than 10 minutes that highlights the Newark experience. Whether your style is documentary, experimental or narrative, this is your opportunity to tell a story that captures Newark’s essence.
This year, filmmakers must include a scene shot in the South Ward — think landmarks, street signs and neighborhood gems — so judges can see the authenticity of Newark come alive on screen.

Awards & Prizes

*6 finalists will be chosen to screen their film and speak on the panel
*Screening and Panel will take place on Thursday, January 29th at 6pm.
*On the day of the screening 3 winners will be announced
*1st Place Winner will receive $500
*2nd Place Winner will receive $250
*3rd Place Winner will receive $150
*Other Prizes awarded to all finalists

Rules & Terms

Criteria for Participation:

Film must posses one of the following:

*Newark Resident/Native: The filmmaker is a current resident of Newark or a native of the city.

Or

*Newark-Centered: The film is focused on Newark, either thematically, through its narrative, or by showcasing the city and its culture.

Or

*Newark Landmark/Filmed in Newark: The film should feature a prominent Newark landmark or be filmed on location within the city.

Required for ALL film submissions:
*Film Length: The film must be no longer than 10 minutes in length.
*Deadline: All films must be submitted by December 15, 2025.
*Film Type: Submissions can be documentary, experimental, or narrative films.
**Challenge: Must have a scene that is filmed in the South Ward. With visible street sign, businesses or landmarks.
