Submission Rules

We celebrate the independent spirit of interesting, diverse, and original storytelling. Projects that push the limits of style and narrative excite us, but there is no single aesthetic or genre that we look for over any other. You should create the project that you want to create, not one that you believe will be a good fit for MFF or anyone else!

Any film or video project with a running time of less than 50 minutes, including credits will be considered. This
includes scripted or improvisational fiction, nonfiction or documentary, experimental film or video, animation, music video, or any other film or video project.

Films have no premiere requirements or prior screening restrictions that impact Festival eligibility
and may have been screened at any number of festivals or other public theatrical exhibitions, broadcast or streamed on television or the Internet, and/or released via any home video or other public distribution platform anywhere in the world.

The Monrovia Film Festival is comprised of both competition and out-of-competition films.

If your project is accepted into the Festival, our Programming team will ultimately decide the program in which it will be placed.

All submitted films will be viewed via a Vimeo or Youtube link. You may make link private.

Subtitles: All projects that contain significant non-English dialogue must include on-screen English subtitles at the time of submission.

Age Requirement: We encourage artists of all ages to submit their work.

Unlicensed Materials: If your submitted project contains unlicensed or uncleared materials, it is the responsibility of the owner or owners of the project to license, clear, or otherwise replace these materials.

Multiple Submissions: You may submit as many projects as you wish.

We contact all officially-submitted projects via email during the first week of June. It is not uncommon for many of them to be caught in spam folders or bounced back to us. This issue seems to affect Gmail accounts more than others. If you don’t hear from us, please know that we have made every effort to contact each individual applicant no later than July 29th. • Attended the inaugural Monrovia Film Festival as a guest and fell in love with Old Town Monrovia. It was an honor to come back year 2 not only as a filmmaker but to also as a winner of best documentary for “Spirit Quest with Jack Maxwell”. The Look Dine-In Cinema is the perfect place for a film festival having once been the Monrovia Feature Film Company movie studio. In front of the cinemas there are bronze sculptures by artist and actor Daniel Stern honoring the film industry which make great photo opps. My crew and I had a wonderful time. Thank you .

Had such a great time at the festival. Had family come with me to the theater. They had many great films from around the world as well as within the community of Monrovia. We were honored to win an award for our film "The Faint Goodbye". Can't recommend the festival enough, we had alot of fun.
