Midwest Fear Fest is a nonprofit, locally grown genre film festival founded in 2024 by filmmakers, for filmmakers. Our mission is to celebrate spine-chilling short films, honor filmmakers of all backgrounds, and create a shared cinematic experience in Indianapolis.

Please note that we will only be considering short films that are 30 minutes or less. We will not be accepting full-length films.

Films with significant ties to Indiana are eligible for reduced submission fees by submitting to the Indiana Short category. Examples of eligibility include the director, writer, or actors being current Indiana residents or natives, or the film being primarily shot in Indiana. Please note that if your film is submitted to this category and does not meet this criterion, it may be disqualified.

Please submit your film to only one category. For example, if your film is submitted in the Indiana Short category, it will also be eligible for consideration as a general Horror/Sci-Fi/Thriller short. Please submit to the most specific category possible.

If you would like clarification on which category to submit to, please contact midwestfearfest@gmail.com.

Top award winners are eligible for a cash prize and a custom Midwest Fear Fest trophy.

Please note: If you’re not present at the festival to accept your trophy and choose to have it mailed, shipping and handling costs will apply. Prizes must be claimed within 30 days of notification, or the award will be forfeited.

ELIGIBILITY

Entrants must fully comply with these Entry Rules and Regulations to be considered eligible for acceptance to the 2026 Midwest Fear Fest.

Eligible films must have been completed in 2023, 2024, 2025, or 2026.

Films with prior distribution or that have been publicly exhibited for profit in the central Indiana region prior to the 2026 Midwest Fear Fest are not eligible for juried awards.

Films that are publicly available online prior to the festival (e.g., YouTube, Vimeo, Netflix, Hulu, iTunes, or other streaming platforms with ongoing access) are not eligible for juried awards. Limited, time-restricted, or password-protected online availability (such as virtual festivals or private hosting) does not affect eligibility.

Entries must be in English or include English subtitles.

Films must be available for screening as part of Midwest Fear Fest in October 2026.

Eligibility for juried awards is at the discretion of Midwest Fear Fest, and submissions to any category are potentially eligible.

Films submitted to previous editions of Midwest Fear Fest should not be resubmitted unless there have been significant revisions or the filmmaker has been invited to do so.

SUBMISSION POLICIES AND SELECTION PROCESS

All films must be submitted through FilmFreeway.

The preferred method for screener submission is online via Vimeo or YouTube. Midwest Fear Fest must be supplied with a current password through the end of the festival.

Entries without payment will not be considered.

Submission of an entry is considered legal permission to screen your film during the festival upon acceptance.

Work-in-progress submissions are accepted but must be clearly noted. The completed version must be received before the final submission deadline to be considered for acceptance.

All submissions will be evaluated by at least two members of the screening team. The festival reserves the right to stop watching after 50% of the runtime if the film does not meet minimum quality standards.

  • Unfortunately I didn't get off set in time to make it, but MFF was so dedicated to making sure that our film was shown properly and that we were very welcome as artists. Thank you for screening our film LOOKER, I hope to be back someday!

  • An unquestionable 10/10. The team at MWFF is beyond communicative and friendly, and the coordination is top-notch. It was a real pleasure to have UNKNOWN USER featured alongside some of the best horror of the Midwest, and to have our work handled by such capable hands.

  • My cast/crew and I had a blast at MWFF! The filmmaker mixer beforehand was a great way to meet the other creatives and the MWFF team, who were very inviting and engaging. The viewing itself was very well done; everything sounded and looked amazing. It was truly an honor to have my first short premiere here, so excited for more things MWFF!
