We now accept submissions for our 2022 edition!

Melbourne Short Film Festival awaits you for an evening of independent short films!

Our super-cozy, historical venue, the Sun Theatre is a popular host of cultural events and festivals, with a dedicated art-loving audience.

Our festival was founded to support and promote independent short films from all around the world. We recognize how difficult it is to get your short film ’out there’, and find a platform where your film can reach the right audience. We aim to promote and provide exposure to these films and organize a fun and culturally diverse night of indie cinema for filmmakers and cinephiles alike.

Our program will reflect the diversity and opportunities within the short film genre, and our goal is to show films that the audience would otherwise have not seen, and leave a lasting impact.

We look forward to seeing your submissions and welcoming you to Melbourne Short Film Festival!

Our submission window for our 4th edition is now open!

The official selection will be carefully picked by our panel of expert judges, and will consist of the films nominated for an award. The films screened at the event will be selected from the official selection and promoted on our social media platforms and website, and the best ones will receive awards at the film festival in a wide range of categories. Both the nominees and the winners will get our official laurels and will be featured on our Facebook page and website.

Our jury panel for our 2021 edition includes:

• David Rusanow (Director, Cinematographer)
Jury for "Best Short Film"

• Lydia Rui (Writer, Director)
Jury for "Best Short Documentary"

• Evan McInnes (Animator, Director and Designer)
Jury for "Best Short Animation"

Melbourne Short Film Festival was well organised, friendly and screened at the beautiful Sun Theatre. We flew over for it, from New Zealand to see our our film Walk a Mile have it's Australian Premiere, and we were thrilled to receive the award for The Best Short Film.

  • So excited that our film "Box Office Smash" won Best Soundtrack at this festival. We were unfortunately not able to attend but the photos of the event and venue looked great on FB and we have even been sent a certificate for the win. Good communication and nicely branded festival that looks like it means business for the long run in Melbourne.
