MEDEZFEST - International Youth & Children Short Film Festival

2026 Edition: Friday, 22nd May 2026 09:00am - 12:00

After a hiatus of a year, we're back and in May 2026 we will be hosting our 2nd edition! We have taken the decision to reconsider the entries that were submitted since December 2024 and they will be competing with the rest of the entries that started coming in again, in these days!

This film festival forms part of a wider event: MEDEZFEST which will include performances of poetry, literature, drama, singing and music recitals (classical / jazz / blues / classic rock).

The name itself is a unique and catchy name that combines the first four letters of the word Mediterranean with the abbreviation "Fest" for festival. The name suggests a celebration of Mediterranean culture, including its film, poetry, literature, drama, dancing, singing and music. The name is easy to remember and has a positive connotation, making it a great choice for an event focused on promoting the arts and culture of the Mediterranean region.

MEDEZFEST will be taking place in Malta, a Mediterranean island located right in the centre of the Mediterranean sea.

Out-of-competition submissions may also be included.

Although some categories have a minimal Submission Fee for regular deadlines, Medezfest will ALWAYS BE FREE for submissions from school children and teachers involved in formal and informal schooling (learners' ages up to 16 years old). Please ensure that you submit to the right category and provide proof (as a learner or as an educator) to be able to enjoy the possibility to submit for free.

AWARDS

1. Official Selection for each category will receive a MEDEZFEST digital certificate with verification and a digital copy of the official MEDEZFEST laurel.
2. Two Overall Winners are chosen from the winners of the main categories.
3. These two Overall Winners will be handed MEDEZFEST's official statuette called the “Il-Bumerin Dehbi” during the awarding ceremony.
4. In case of the recipients’ absence during the award ceremony, MEDEZFEST will send the statuette to them via post.
5. Other additional award prizes may be given during the ceremony.
6. Selection:
– NOT SELECTED – unfortunately your film didn’t meet the minimum requirements of the Film Festival
– SEMI-FINALIST – your film was selected as the semi-finalist in the category(s) to which it was submitted. The judging status is to all categories.
– FINALIST – your film was selected as the finalist in the category(s) to which it was submitted. The judging status is to all categories.
– WINNER – your film won the category(s) to which it was submitted and received the Official Selection to the Live Screening.

This makes the selection process more transparent to all filmmakers and is a guarantee that all kind of films (short, feature, student, documentary, etc) have equal opportunities to be selected to the Live Screening.

For translation's sake, the Maltese words: Il-Bumerin Dehbi may be translated in English to: The Golden Monk Seal.

The Mediterranean monk seal (Monachus monachus) is a monk seal belonging to the family Phocidae. It is the only seal to inhabit the Mediterranean basin and is a critically endangered species. According to the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) (2012), the Mediterranean monk seal is on the verge of extinction, currently amounting to approximately 700 individuals. The Mediterranean monk seal sightings have been historically recorded in the surrounding Maltese waters, however, nowadays are near to none.

Thank you very much for this honor. I am truly happy that my film received the Official Selection recognition at Medezfest 2026.

May I kindly ask if there will be an official certificate, trophy, or commemorative award for the Official Selection, and how we may obtain it if available?

    Best regards,

MedezFest stands out as far more than a traditional film festival—it is a true cultural incubator and an essential educational platform. The dedication of the organizing team is evident in every aspect of the event: from the thoughtful curation of the program to the attention given to filmmakers, audiences, and especially young creatives. The festival clearly places a strong emphasis on education, fostering dialogue, and empowering emerging voices. This commitment to cultural growth and learning is both rare and invaluable.
What impressed us most is the way MedezFest actively builds a creative community. It is a vital cultural hub where filmmakers can connect, exchange ideas, and grow artistically. In an era where meaningful cultural spaces are increasingly important, MedezFest serves as a powerful and necessary presence, nurturing talent and promoting artistic expression at a high level.
The overall quality of the selected works was good. The films showcased a rich diversity of perspectives, styles, and narratives, reflecting both technical excellence and profound artistic sensitivity. Being included among such strong and inspiring works was already an honor; receiving an award in this context made the experience even more meaningful.
We wholeheartedly recommend MedezFest to filmmakers around the world. It is a festival driven by passion, professionalism, and a genuine commitment to cinema as both an art form and a tool for education and social impact.

  • JAVI NAVARRO

Very bad communication!!! They say we won a prize and they will send us the trophy but then they never ever respond to my emails again.

    September 2024
    Response from festival:

Good Morning Javi. We are very sorry to hear that you feel this way. We did have some delays and we apologise for that. The Festival which is based in schools, changed operation, moving from one school to another which included the Festival Director whose full-time job also changed from working as a School Principal in the school to a Director in another school.

The bad communication that you refer to is simply explained by the fact that the running of a school, with all its responsibilities had to take priority.

Your Award has been posted today. It does exist :-) and we will send you a tracking number as well.

We hope that this clarifies matters.

  • Thank you for accepting my experimental movie into your festival! May you continue your path in sharing unique projects with the world! I will recommend this to every filmmaker I know!
