WHAT KIND OF SHORT FILMS ARE WE LOOKING FOR?
• Minikino Film Week embraces fresh ideas and creative storytelling.
• Minikino Film Week value diversity and inclusiveness in short films honoring human rights while promoting equality and diversity of ethnics, racial backgrounds, traditions, heritages, genders and abilities in our environment. We value diversity and inclusiveness in short film work.
• Minikino Film Week appreciate personal values in short film work, but are able to convey them in the most professional work.
• An achievement beyond just the audio visual quality; giving the audience experience that brought us to tears, made us laugh, or reminded us of something we’d almost forgotten.
• Minikino Film Week are looking for a short film work that stands out, something that is daring to be different, whilst keeping it short, simple and understandable, although it may make us think in ways we never expected to.
RULES & TERMS
1. TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS FOR SHORT FILMS
Please prepare your digital data of your work as;
1.1. Maximum duration of 25 minutes, no extra second nor frame allowed.
1.2. Short Films that have been produced or premiered after 1 January 2021.
1.3. Full HD 1080p in 25 or 24 fps preferred.
1.4. H.264 compression Mp4 container preferred.
1.5. Screening format will be on 16:9 (wide screen) ratio, 1920x1080px; Any different ratio will be presented with a pillar box or letter box, avoiding unwanted stretched images.
1.6. Spoken & written language in the film:
1.6.1 All Short films must be presented in their original language.
1.6.2 If other than English dialogues are used, films must be accompanied with English subtitles in SubRip/srt file. Therefore, clean version of the film (without any embedded/burned subtitle) is preferred.
1.6.3 For English spoken film, please provide a dialog list, especially for the film with strong accents/ dialects.
1.6.4 Otherwise you already have Indonesian subs for your work; A Bahasa Indonesia subtitle will be produced by minikinostudio.com, with no extra cost, based on provided English language/ subtitles.
1.7. Please ensure the following are provided as part your submission(s):
1.7.1 (at least) 3(three) different stills from the film.
1.7.2 A photo of the director.
1.7.3 Printing quality film poster’s file (optional. When available, it will be curated and hard printed to be included in the poster exhibition during the festival).
1.8. Preview must be the final work with no watermark or embedded logo that was not meant to be part of the film aesthetic. Any work in progress or embedded with additional watermarks will be instantly rejected.
2. TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS FOR VR FILM
2.1. Maximum duration of 15 minutes.
2.2. The work that have been produced or premiered after after January 1, 2017
2.3. Fiction, Documentary, Animation, Experimental short films and Videoclips produced in 360°, in 2D or 3D
2.4. Must be compatible with Oculus Quest 2
3. TO BE NOTED
3.1. Submitter should be the one who responsible for the copyright of the film.
3.2. You may submit more than one film as long as each film meets the eligibility requirements.
3.3. By submitting, you are agree to screen your film in Minikino Film Week without a screening fee nor any monetary reward. This is still in an ongoing effort in the committee, and we will always try to find a better situation for filmmakers at every funding opportunity.
3.4. By submitting, you are committed to screen the film, if the film gets selected.
3.5. All information provided in the submission form will be used as a reference for all publications, social media and on the website, and everything related to festival publications. Please carefully check name spelling, email address, and social media handles.
3.6. Some of important notification emails have its deadlines. Make sure you give us an email address that you can regularly check.
4. SELECTION PROCESS
4.1. INVITATION TO BE THE 2023 OFFICIAL SELECTIONS During late submission, 22 March 2023 until Notification date 31 May 2023, you may find your status changed from ‘undecided’ to ‘Semi-Finalist’ in the FilmFreeway; or “Film Selected” in Short Film Depot;
4.1.1 You will receive an (automated) invitation email asking you to send your digital file of final work to MFW9 offline database.
4.1.2 Meanwhile, we will also contact you by email, asking you to fill up a consent form before given deadline date.
4.1.3 Your status in this stage is still a subject to change back to ‘undecided’, furthermore to ‘not selected’ until all requirements are satisfied (See no.1 Technical Requirements). This includes meeting the deadlines given to respond to the invitation and filling out the consent form.
4.1.4 We are committed that nothing may go further without written consent of the rights owner of the work. Therefore, we can only use your short film by your authorization in a manner consistent with the consent given. Protecting your short film data is of our utmost importance, as it is also protecting our credibility and reputation.
4.1.5 Status ‘Selected’ and ‘Not Selected’ in the submission platforms (Filmfreeway & the ShortFilmDepot) will be officially declared on the notification date 31 May 2023.
4.1.6 All the short films that were already in our off-line database during this stage, and satisfied all the requirements, are the list from which the festival programming will be made.
4.1.7 Status ‘Selected’ is final. Short Films with this status is the Official Selections and will be part of the festival’s programs. We will work on the Bahasa Indonesia subs as soon as possible and scheduling for screenings during the festival date.
4.1.8 Please notice that most of the festival’s in-person screenings are free & open for public. There will be age rating guides for each programs.
4.2. ANNOUNCEMENT OF THE NOMINEES AND AWARD WINNERS
4.2.1 The Award Nominees will be contacted by email, and then announced to public 1 (one) month prior to the festival’s date. This is on early August 2023.
4.2.2 Award Winners will be announced on stage at the international Awarding of the festival, Friday, 22 September 2023
4.2.3 Announcement will also be available at Minikino Film Week official website and all the MFW Social Media.
4.3. SHORT FILM LIBRARY LIST (Optional)
Each years, there are list of short films that were not selected, yet received special attention from the selection team. We may offered these short films to take part, specifically in MFW Short Film Market, The Short Film Library. Read more about SHORT FILM MARKET here https://minikino.org/filmweek/short-film-market/
Short Film Library will be available for accredited professionals only and is open during the dates of festival only.
5. CERTIFICATES, RECOGNITION & AWARDS ELIGIBILITY
All short films that already accomplished the requirements in no. 3.1
5.1. INTERNATIONAL PREMIERE RECOGNITION CERTIFICATE shall be given upon request. Only for short films that meet the following conditions:
5.1.1 INTERNATIONAL PREMIERE are only for a Non-Indonesia’s productions.
5.1.2 Only for films that have never been showing anywhere other than their country of origin.
5.1.3 A statement email from producer(s)/director(s) is needed; Stated that the work have not been, and will not presented at any other International screening event neither live nor online (exhibited on the Internet with open access/publicly) before the end date of MFW9 Festival (Saturday, 23 September 2023).
5.2. NATIONAL PREMIERE RECOGNITION CERTIFICATE shall be given upon request. Only for short films that meet the following conditions:
5.2.1 Only for Indonesia’s productions
5.2.2 Only for films that have never been showing in Indonesia.
5.2.3 A statement email from producer(s)/director(s) is needed; Stated that the work have not been, and will not presented at any other National screening event neither live nor online (exhibited on the Internet with open access/publicly) before the MFW9 closing date (Saturday, 23 September 2023).
5.3. WORLD PREMIERE RECOGNITION CERTIFICATE shall be given upon request.
Only for short films that meet the following conditions:
5.3.1 Only for films that have never been showing/premiered at all, and MFW9 festival dates will be the first time public showing of the work.
5.3.2 A statement email from producer(s)/director(s) is needed; Stated that the work have not been, and will not presented at any other screening event neither live nor online (exhibited on the Internet with open access/publicly) before the end date of MFW9 Festival (Saturday, 23 September 2023).
5.4. OFFICIAL SELECTIONS RECOGNITION
Only for short films that meet the following conditions may be selected;
5.4.1 Short Films that already fulfil all the requirements of step 3 in the selection process.
5.4.2 Short Films that have been produced and released after 1 January 2020.
5.4.3 Short Films that fulfilled all the technical requirements.
5.5. INTERNATIONAL AWARDS ELIGIBILITY
Only for the productions that meet the following conditions may be eligible to be considered and nominated for awards;
5.5.1 Must holds Indonesian premiere status. The film must never been screened in Indonesia outside MFW9 before the closing date (Saturday, 23 September 2023).
5.5.2 Only for International submissions (Including Indonesia’s productions enter through International Submission) with the 2023 Official Selection status.
5.5.3 Must have been released after 1 January 2021.
5.5.4 A statement email from the producer/director will be required; stated that the film will holds its Indonesian premier status for MFW9.
5.5.5 MFW9 committees have the right to cancel the Nomination status if the film had been screened at other event / festival in Indonesia before MFW9 commenced.
5.6. NATIONAL AWARD ELIGIBILITY
Only for Indonesia’s productions that meet the following conditions may be eligible to be considered and nominated for awards;
5.6.1 Must holds Bali premiere status (exception for Indonesia Raja 2023 selections screening). The film must never been screened in Bali outside MFW9 and/or Indonesia Raja 2023 screenings, before the MFW9 closing date (Saturday, 23 September 2023).
5.6.2 Only for Indonesian productions with 2023 Official Selection status, also including films selected in Indonesia Raja 2023, and S-Express 2023 Indonesia
5.6.3 Must have been released after 1 January 2021.
5.6.4 A statement email from producer/director will be required; stated that the film will holds its Bali premier status for MFW9. (exception for selections in Indonesia Raja 2023 that allowed to be screened in Bali before the date).
5.6.5 MFW9 committees have the right to cancel the nomination status if we found out that the film had been screened at other event / festival in Bali before MFW9 commenced; (exception for Indonesia Raja 2023 selections screening)
6. ENTRY FEE WAIVER & DISCOUNT ELIGIBILITY

6.1. INDONESIAN DIRECTOR(S) & PRODUCER(S)
Get a 50% discount code upon receipt of a copy of a current and valid ID card (KTP) or Indonesian Passport with your cover letter in email.
6.2. ALL STUDENTS (National & International)
One waiver code for one director only, upon receipt of an email proposal with a copy of a current and valid student ID card or a letter from an accredited school verifying enrolment.
6.3. FILMMAKERS WITH 2022 OFFICIALLY SELECTED WORK (MFW8).
Waiver code, upon receipt a copy of the Minikino Film Week 8 digital certificate or simply email us with some information, so we can easily find you in our database!
CONTACT US AND GET THE WAIVER CODE FIRST BEFORE SUBMITTING. ONCE PAID WE HAVE NO AUTHORITY TO CANCEL OR RETURN YOUR SUBMISSION PAYMENT.
MFW committee reserves the right to refuse your waiver proposal, at its discretion, including, without limitation. MFW Waiver grants you a limited, revocable, non-transferable and nonexclusive license to submit your short film to the MINIKINO FILM WEEK for your own personal use only.
MFW NO LONGER GIVING WAIVER DURING EXTENDED SUBMISSION (after 10 April 2023).
