Jean Rouch International Film Festival - Regulations 42nd Edition (May 4-11, 2023)
1. Presenting the Festival and its sections
The Jean Rouch International Festival endeavors to present films that examine issues in the social sciences and humanities, through both their purpose and approach.
Our call-for-films comprises three sections:
• International Competition
A competitive section for contemporary works with no restrictions on theme, genre, or duration.
• Cap sur le vivant | A Focus on the Living World
A competitive section dedicated to films that explore the relationship between humans and the environment.
• Shared experiences
A non-competitive section showcasing films based on long-term fieldwork and the close collaboration of filmmakers and protagonists.
2. Programming
A social sciences perspective, an ethical and responsible approach, a personal point of view together with high artistic demands will be major criteria guiding the Programming Committee’s decision.
THE PROGRAMMING COMMITTEE WILL NOT CONSIDER FICTION FILMS, BROADCAST STORIES, NEWS REPORTS, OR MAGAZINES.
The Programming Committee will select the films for all three sections, and reserves the right to choose in which section a film will be included. Its decision is final.
3. Submission terms
• Works submitted must have been completed after December 1st, 2021
• All films must be entered online using the entry form via FilmFreeway
• Films must be sent in their original language with English and/or French subtitles
• Each filmmaker may enter only one film
• Films submitted for selection in previous years cannot be re-entered
• Films that have already been broadcast on a TV channel or VOD platform (except for festival platforms) will not be considered
• Films selected in competition at Cinéma du Réel (Paris, France) will not be accepted
• A file of the film must be uploaded on FilmFreeway server. An Internet private link and access password must also be provided
• Only those filmmakers, producers, and distributors whose films are selected will receive a personal email. This email will be sent by early March 2023. It will indicate in which section the film has been selected
• The selection results will appear on our website in late March 2023.
4. Submission deadline and fees
• The deadline for submissions is November 15, 2022
• The entry fee is €10 per film.
• Works must be submitted online with a FilmFreeway registration completed and all fees paid by the deadline
• Submissions fees are non-refundable
• Films produced exclusively in the following countries are eligible for a fee waiver:

5. Material to be provided for the selected films
• For screening: a digital file of the film, high resolution (1920 x1080), recommended codec H.264, high bitrate: 20-30 Mbps
• Two horizontal photos of the film (300 dpi, .jpg)
• Photo(s) of the filmmaker(s) (300 dpi, .jpg)
• English and/or French subtitles file (.srt format)
In the case of postal delivery, the sender will be responsible for the shipping costs.
6. Participants’ obligations
• The films selected for the three sections—International Competition, A Focus on the Living World, and Shared Experiences—will be made available to the Festival free of charge and without compensation to the rights holders. No screening fee will be paid.
• No film may be withdrawn from the Festival after notification of its selection by the Programming Committee
• In entering a film, each licensee confirms that all image rights of the people filmed have been respected.
• A viewing copy of each selected film will be kept in the Comité du Film Ethnographique archive.
• The Festival reserves the right to share a selected film with journalists for press coverage, in a secure manner, before the Festival.
• The Festival reserves the right to use short excerpts of the film for the Festival trailer, unless otherwise notified by the rights holders.
• The winning films will be screened a second time as part of the rerun of the award-winning films. No screening fee will be paid for this second screening.
7. Festival jury and prizes
The International Jury will view all films of the international competition and award the following prizes: Nanook-Jean Rouch Grand Prize, Bartók Prize, Intangible Cultural Heritage Prize, Mario Ruspoli Prize, First Film Prize.
The Gaïa Prize Jury will award the Gaïa Prize to a film from the International Competition or from the section A Focus on the Living World.
The Inalco Jury will award the Mondes en Regards Prize to a film from the International Competition.
The Jury of inmates of Fleury Mérogis detention Centre will award the Fleury Doc. Prize to an International Competition film.
Two new prizes awarded by two separate juries will be announced soon for the 2023 edition of the festival
The prize money will be paid directly to the filmmakers.
8. Conditions for participation
Participation in the Festival implies acceptance of these rules and regulations. The Festival reserves the right to modify it at any time and without notice.

Règlement 42e Édition du Festival international Jean Rouch (4 au 11 mai 2023)
1. Présentation du Festival & sections de la sélection officielle
Le Festival international Jean Rouch, organisé par le Comité du film ethnographique, propose de découvrir des œuvres cinématographiques en relation, par leur propos et leur démarche, avec les sciences humaines et sociales.
L’appel à films du festival concerne les trois sections suivantes :
• Compétition internationale
Section compétitive dédiée à des œuvres contemporaines sans restriction de thème ni de durée.
• Cap sur le vivant
Section compétitive dédiée aux films qui explorent les relations des humains avec leur environnement (naturel, animal, non-humain).
• Expériences partagées
Section non compétitive dédiée aux films qui sont issus d’un long travail de terrain et d’enquête, et accordent une place particulière à la relation établie entre les cinéastes et les protagonistes.
2. Programmation
Une approche nourrie par les sciences humaines et sociales, une démarche éthique et responsable, une exigence esthétique, et un point de vue personnel sont les principaux éléments qui guident les choix du comité de programmation.
LE FESTIVAL NE PREND PAS EN COMPTE LES FILMS DE FICTION, LES REPORTAGES, LES ÉMISSIONS D’INFORMATION ET LES MAGAZINES.
Le comité de programmation choisit les films de ces trois sections et se réserve le choix de la section dans laquelle chaque film sera présenté. Sa décision est définitive.
3. Conditions de soumission
• La date limite de soumission est fixée au 15 novembre 2022
• Les œuvres soumises doivent avoir été achevées après le 1er décembre 2021
• Tous les films doivent être inscrits en ligne sur la plateforme FilmFreeway
• Les films doivent être envoyés en version originale sous-titrée en anglais ou/et en français
• Un·e réalisateur·trice ne peut inscrire qu’un seul film
• Les films envoyés en sélection les années précédentes ne peuvent être réinscrits
• Les films faisant déjà l’objet d’une programmation sur une chaîne de télévision ou plateforme VOD (hors plateforme festival) ne sont pas acceptés
• Les films sélectionnés en compétition à Cinéma du Réel ne sont pas pris en compte
• Un fichier du film doit être téléchargé sur le serveur FilmFreeway. Un lien internet protégé d’un mot de passe valide jusqu’à la fin du mois de mai 2023 doit également être fourni
• Seuls les cinéastes, producteurs·trices et distributeurs·trices dont le film est sélectionné recevront un courriel personnel. Ce message leur sera adressé début mars 2023 et indiquera la section dans lequel le film est programmé
• Les résultats de la sélection seront publiés sur notre site fin mars 2023 (comitedufilmethnographique.com)
4. Dates et frais d’inscription
• La date limite de soumission est fixée au 15 novembre 2022
• Les frais d’inscription sont de 10 € par film. Seuls les films soumis en ligne sur la plateforme FilmFreeway, dont l'inscription est complète, et dont les frais d'inscription ont été réglés, seront pris en considération
• Les frais d'inscription ne sont pas remboursables
• Les films produits entièrement dans les pays suivants peuvent obtenir une exonération des droits d'inscription :

5. Matériel à fournir pour les films sélectionnés dans l’une des trois sections
• Pour la projection : un fichier numérique du film, haute résolution (1920 x 1080), codec recommandé H.264, bitrate élevé : 20-30 Mbps.
• Deux photos horizontales du film (300 dpi, .jpg)
• Une photo des cinéastes (300 dpi, .jpg)
• Un fichier du sous-titrage anglais et/ou français (format .srt)
En cas d’envoi postal, les frais d’envoi aller et retour sont à la charge de l’expéditeur·trice.
6. Obligations des participants
• Les films retenus pour les trois sections : Compétition Internationale, Cap sur le vivant et Expériences partagées, sont mis à disposition du Festival gratuitement et sans contrepartie pour leurs ayants droit. Aucun droit de projection ne sera versé.
• Aucun film ne peut être retiré du Festival après notification de sa sélection par le comité de programmation
• La production confirme que tous les droits d’images des personnes filmées ont été respectés
• Une copie de chaque film sélectionné est conservée par le Comité du film ethnographique pour ses archives et pour consultation interne
• Lorsqu’un film est sélectionné, le Festival se réserve le droit de le partager avec des journalistes, de manière sécurisée, avant le Festival
• Le Festival se réserve le droit d’utiliser de courts extraits du film pour la bande-annonce du Festival, sauf notification contraire de la part des ayants droit
• Les films primés font l’objet d’une deuxième projection dans le cadre de la reprise des films primés. Aucun droit de projection n'est versé pour cette seconde projection.
7. Jurys et prix
Le Jury international voit tous les films programmés en Compétition internationale et décerne les prix suivants : Grand Prix Nanook-Jean Rouch, Prix Bartók, Prix du patrimoine culturel immatériel, Prix Mario Ruspoli, Prix du premier film.
Le Jury du Prix Gaïa décerne le Prix Gaïa à un film de la Compétition internationale ou de la section Cap sur le vivant.
Le Jury Inalco décerne le Prix Mondes en Regards à un film de la Compétition internationale.
Le Jury de détenus de la maison d’arrêt de Fleury Mérogis décerne le Prix Fleury Doc. à un film de la Compétition internationale.
Deux nouveaux prix décernés par deux jurys distincts seront annoncés prochainement pour l'édition 2023 du Festival.
Le montant des prix est versé aux cinéastes.
8. Conditions de participation
La participation au Festival implique l'acceptation de la totalité des articles de ce règlement. Le Festival se réserve le droit de le modifier à tout moment et sans préavis.
