Leadership: Roselyn Omaka is now the Festival Director. Founded in 2008 by Mikel Fair, the Houston Comedy Film Festival is recognized as one of the top comedy film festivals on the FilmFreeway circuit and is dedicated to spotlighting independent comedic storytellers and fostering a vibrant creative community.

Submissions: Now accepting submissions for Spring 2026. The submission window runs through February 2026. For the first time, feature films are eligible alongside our traditional categories: Feature Films, Short Films, Music Videos, Web Series, Dark Comedy, Romantic Comedy, Mockumentary, TV Pilots, Commercials, Micro Films, Animated Comedy, Horror Comedy, Stand-up Comedy, and Sketch Comedy. Shorts and episodic projects must be 30 minutes or less (including credits); feature films must be1:30 minutes or less and showcase strong comedic storytelling.

Screening & judging: If your film is private, please provide a password for access. Selected films are judged by a panel of industry professionals. The festival offers in‑person screenings, networking opportunities, and industry panels designed to support emerging and established comedy filmmakers

Eligibility Guidelines

- All films are eligible for submission, regardless of distribution status or previous festival acceptances.
- Films and videos are eligible even if publicly available on platforms like YouTube or Vimeo.

- Only films completed within the last 5 years (from the festival year) are eligible for submission. For the 2026 festival, films must have been completed on or after January 1, 2021.

- All filmmakers MUST purchase a ticket for entry. Wristbands will be provided before entry.
- Submission fee is separate from event attendance.
- Event basic ticket fee: $50 required for all attendees, including filmmakers.

Houston Comedy Film Festival under the leadership of Roselyn of Bolanle Media was hands down one of the most supportive, hospitable, and exhilarating experiences I've had a film festival. The communication and support leading up to the film festival was top tier. The films and the filmmakers were phenomenal. And we experienced so much in ONE DAY! In spite of the craziness of a government shutdown that snarled travel for many people coming in, the organizers made it happen. The number of attendees was thus limited and some were unavoidably late. In spite of all of that, the event was fantastic. There were opportunities to meet other aspiring film makers and writers, network, and trade lessons learned. As the festival grows, don't lose those personal touches that made the event so inviting. Well worth the time and effort to attend from across the country. Big thanks for the opportunity to continue on the path to being a produced screenwriter.

Have you completed a fun parody of a popular song, film or person? The judges are impressed by good stories, great acting, excellent cinematography, and cool editing that sync really well with the music. If your music video is publicly available on Vimeo, Vevo or YouTube, your submission is qualified for entry. Official selections, nominations or awards on the Film Festival Circuit may help your video get exposure. The time limit for the Funny Music Video category is five minutes and fifty nine seconds (05:59) including all credits.

Sketch Comedy

There are plenty of ad libbing and performance adjustments that are made on the fly. Made popular by shows like Saturday Night Live, Mad TV and House of Buggin’, the sketches are improvised by actors and comedians in the form of a dramatized series of jokes and situations that are oftentimes related to current news events and cultural activities.
