Hanyang International Shorts Awards (HISA)
"Dreaming Cinema, Blooming at Hanyang."

Building on Hanyang University's deep-rooted cinematic tradition, the Hanyang International Shorts Awards (HISA) relaunches with a renewed international outlook. Leveraging the rich legacy of the Department of Theater and Film—a cradle of film education in South Korea—HISA aims to discover young and creative independent short films from around the world. Our mission is to provide a vibrant platform where emerging filmmakers can connect with the wider world, stepping beyond the boundaries of academia.

Held twice annually—in the last week of Oct (Summer Edition) and the last week of Apr (Winter Edition)—HISA offers talented film students and independent directors the opportunity to showcase their original works. It is also a celebratory occasion for film lovers to experience diverse stories and perspectives.

The Honorary Festival President is Professor Sang-In Lee, Chair of the Department of Theater and Film at Hanyang University. The jury comprises accomplished faculty members from Hanyang University who are also active professionals in the Korean film industry, ensuring a rigorous and fair selection process. [Detailed Rules for AI Film Category]

For works submitted to the 'Best AI Film' category, the following detailed rules apply in addition to the general regulations.

A. Obligation to Specify and Explain AI Usage
Upon submission, the submitter must provide a detailed description, either in the designated section on FilmFreeway or in an attached document, of the types of AI technology used in the work (e.g., ChatGPT, Sora, Runway, Midjourney, D-ID, etc.) and the scope of their application (e.g., scenario generation/assistance, storyboard creation, video generation, voice synthesis, editing, etc.).
It must be clearly stated which parts of the creative process AI contributed to, and what roles the human creators performed (planning, direction, data input/selection, editing/assembly of results, etc.). A brief explanation of the AI usage process can be helpful for judging.

B. Copyright and Legal Responsibility
Responsibility for copyrights and usage rights regarding all elements used in the work, including AI-based content (video, image, audio, text, etc.), rests entirely with the submitter.
The submitter must thoroughly verify that the AI-generated results do not infringe upon the copyrights, portrait rights, trademark rights, or other rights of third parties. All legal responsibility in case of related disputes lies with the submitter.
Works where the AI model is suspected of having illegally learned from copyrighted material, generating results that clearly infringe on copyrights, or were produced using illegal data may be excluded from judging or disqualified.

C. Transparency and Ethics
It should be transparently disclosed to the audience and jury that AI was used in the creation of the work, and specifying AI usage in the credits or introductory materials is recommended.
If AI-generated video, images, audio, text, etc., cause social controversy (e.g., false information, defamation, hate speech, discrimination) or are deemed ethically problematic, the work may be excluded from judging.

I had the honor of having my short film Se Eu Fosse o Diabo (If I Were the Devil) selected as a Semi-Finalist at the Hanyang International Shorts Awards (HISA).

The communication from the festival team was warm and professional, with clear updates about the selection process and schedule. What impressed me the most was the scale of the festival — over 3,000 submissions — and the dedication of the jury to carefully review each film.

Even at the Semi-Finalist stage, I felt that my work was truly valued and appreciated. I highly recommend HISA to any filmmaker looking for a serious, international platform that celebrates short films with respect and passion.
