FIVER 2025 – International Festival of Film, Dance & New Media
Centro Danza Matadero | Madrid | September 11-14, 2025

FIVER is back with an open call! After three years focused on experimental and stage-based programming at Teatros del Canal, we are thrilled to return to Matadero Cultural Center in Madrid, bringing back our international film competition with fresh energy, an expanded industry program, and a vibrant off-section filled with music, parties, and creative encounters.

FIVER is not just a festival—it’s a meeting point for filmmakers, dancers, animators, and new media artists who explore movement and the body on screen. This year, we’re offering a unique space to screen your work, connect with international programmers, and engage with a global community of creators.

Why submit your film to FIVER 2025?

This year’s edition will feature:

International screenings CDN (Centro Danza Matadero) Madrid.
#FIVERDOCS, showcasing documentaries that use the body as a tool for expression, activism, and artistic research.
Industry panels, networking events, and pitch sessions with international festival programmers and creative directors.
A creative workshop on Coreocinema & movement in public spaces.
A vibrant off-section with music, parties, and artistic encounters.

We are looking for all genre fiction, experimental, animation and documentary short films that explore the possibilities of the union between cinema and dance. We look forward for watching new collaborations between filmmakers and choreographers, crazy experiments that use the representation of the body on the screen and unique stories that work with movement to break narrative boundaries.

Join us as we bring FIVER back to Centro Danza Matadero Madrid, celebrating the intersection of film, dance, and new media in a unique, artist-centered festival.

🔹 Submissions open now!

FIVER 2025 is NOT a competition!

After deep reflection, we’ve decided to reject the competitive model and embrace a more inclusive and community-driven approach. Every selected filmmaker will be recognized as a finalist and will receive a screening fee to support their participation in the festival.

We believe this is the right year to take this step. With international festival programmers and industry leaders from across the globe attending, FIVER 2025 will be a space for connection, exchange, and artistic growth—not rivalry.

To encourage in-person participation, we’ll be happy to provide support letters to help filmmakers secure additional travel assistance.

Categories:

-International Short Films (up to 25 min) – Includes fiction, animation, and experimental works.

-Spanish Short Films – Includes fiction, documentary, animation, and experimental works.

-FIVERDOCS – International documentaries of any length (shorts and feature-length films).

And because true collaboration happens beyond the screen, expect late-night gatherings, unexpected artistic encounters, and plenty of music and celebration.
Come for the films, stay for the people. Let’s build a global cine-dance community together!

We accept films produced since 2023 that explore dance, movement, physicality, or choreographic work in its broadest sense

You can participate in the following sections:

-International Short Films: Fiction, experimental, and animation (Max 25 min). We are particularly interested in works that explore the dialogue between cinematic narrative and the body. When we speak of the body, we don't necessarily mean movement—we have a very open approach to the concept of choreography. We are inspired by the idea of coreocinema, a term coined in the 1940s by John Martin to describe Maya Deren's early films, which explored the intersection of the body and film in groundbreaking ways.

Spanish Short Films: Fiction, documentary, animation, and experimental. Eligible films must have at least one key creative member (director, producer, lead dancer, or choreographer) of Spanish nationality or residency in Spain. Alternatively, international productions may also qualify if more than 50% of the film's locations are within Spanish territory.

FIVERDOCS: Documentary films of any length (short and feature-length). We are particularly interested in films that use the documentary genre to explore how the body can make diverse realities visible, serve as a tool for social denunciation, or be used creatively to accompany cinematic processes with the greatest artistic freedom.

.
Recordings of stage performances, promotional videos, and music videos will not be accepted.

If your film is selected, we may request Spanish subtitles if required.

Selected films may be included in non-commercial screenings organized by FIVER for the purposes of festival promotion and outreach. Any commercial screenings will be compensated with an additional screening fee.

Intriguing curation - not just because it included my film DANCING IS AN OLD FRIEND. During this time when travel is not easy, and an online presence doesn't fully substitute, FIVER still managed to make this distant filmmaker feel welcome. I hope to attend some day in the future...
