ESSENCE FILM FESTIVAL MISSION STATEMENT

The ESSENCE Film Festival (EFF), in collaboration with Essence Studios, showcases exceptional original projects in film, television, music, and new media created by Black storytellers across the African diaspora. Anchored in the belief that Black stories deserve to be told in their full truth with intent to disrupt mainstream narrative, and that Black storytellers should feel entitled in their right to do so, the Essence Film Festival has built a movement that uplifts and normalized the Black global worldview in Hollywood by championing and empowering the artists at the forefront of this storytelling.

FESTIVAL OVERVIEW

Essence Film Festival (EFF) is the ultimate gathering of global Black storytellers, and audiences seeking to discover these new voices and new perspectives. As the premiere destination for emerging global creatives and cultural curators alike, the Essence Film Festival presents dynamic content on international platforms. Our annual celebration of storytelling traditions across Black America and the African diaspora champions creative expression through entertainment by uncovering and amplifying new voices, talent, and ideas through premiere exhibitions from content creators across the global filmmaking community. Following the legacy of the ESSENCE Festival Of Culture, the Essence Film Festival is centered around programming targeted to the global Black community, women, and people of color.

Each festival day provides innovative experiences where audiences discover and celebrate storytelling in all forms, from film and television projects to music and audio presentations. Daily industry conversations, symposiums, workshops, panel discussions and other events during the Essence Film Festival brings artists and audiences together through transformative cinematic experiences that facilitate a pipeline to carry and support indie creators from pitch through production. Through the power of Black storytelling, the event connects dynamic filmmakers to career advancing resources, births new cultural connections, and creates cinematic heirlooms as we reach new and established audiences worldwide.

  • For its 2nd year and very small staff, the Essence Film Festival is quite wonderful. However, it must be more integrated and marketed/promoted into the Essence Festival, the New Orleans region communities, and to Hollywood agents, acquisitions, managers, studio, and producers. EFF is a REAL opportunity for Black filmmakers to have a competitive film festival with economic significance not just for the city, airlines, hotels, and restaurants, but also for the filmmakers participating and creatives in the region.

The Live Script Readings are FIRE and very innovative. This is the highlight and best part of the film festival. 100!!!
