  • Thank you very much to Diana and the Emerald Coast Film Festival for selecting my documentary KING CAKE: THE NEW ORLEANS MARDI GRAS STORY to play in your festival. I know Florida has had a rough past few weeks with Hurricane Ian but I was glad to offer some entertainment and escapism from the reality of rebuilding post-Ian. Thank you for the award you bestowed upon the doc of BEST HISTORICAL DOCUMENTARY FEATURE FILM. I look forward to submitting future projects. Diana gave a personal touch to the festival and reached out to the filmmakers which gave a one on one feel. Thank you for the experience, promotion and consideration. All the best. :)

    Response from festival:

Thank you Will Hess for entering your outstanding documentary, spending a decade on research and remaining diligent and disciplined in order to complete this feature film.

You did an amazing job of capturing local New Orleanian viewpoints about Mardi Gras, revealing it’s 300 years of religious, cultural, pagan, mythical, and musical roots, explained the significance of the King Cake and what the hidden baby inside represented, and let us hear from Parade float designers, Mardi Gras crew captains, political leaders who’ve overseen it, and famous entertainers / Kings as Lagniappe!

Honored to have you aboard and looking forward to seeing you and your next film!

    Response from festival:

Thank you for your kindness Ajinkya. Your heart of compassion is reflected in your film, your understanding, flexibility and willingness to go the extra mile is also not only honorable but greatly appreciated. Those who master such traits and have good communication skills will become the best filmmakers.

As with most faith and family friendly Festivals we’re not fond of utilizing curse words / “F “words for expressing frustration / upset but there were only a couple of them in this film and we liked the heart of your storyline, so an edit was suggested. How refreshing it was that you and your team weren’t offended! Thank you for being respectful and understanding of our audience and for taking the time to remove them for our festival. We all know children and young adults will eventually hear curse words especially in today’s secular world where in certain circles it is popular, but we’re trying to set a good example here and you helped us. Thank you again, congratulations on your award of “Honorable Mention” and God bless you all!

    Response from festival:

Thank you Alex! Your compassion for giving a voice to the voiceless is very admirable. “Honor Me”, and “The forgotten children of Congo” (both award winners) are wake up calls to the world; as is “Surviving Burkitts” which was also an Official Selection.

Oh and You just wait until next year when you can come to Florida in person and you’ll get all the southern hospitality you can handle! God bless you and keep up the great work!

  • Galina Fesenko
