Cinema Shift Festival is a Toronto-based, curated AI film festival in Canada dedicated to narrative, story-driven cinema created through AI-assisted and hybrid production processes.

The festival centers on human authorship, narrative intent, and cinematic coherence. AI is treated as a creative tool within the filmmaking process, not as an author or a spectacle. Films are selected based on how thoughtfully these tools serve storytelling and how clearly the filmmaker’s voice and perspective are expressed.

Alongside screenings, Cinema Shift Festival hosts curated talks and conversations that explore authorship, creative decision-making, and the evolving language of cinema in the context of AI-assisted filmmaking.

Cinema Shift Festival is a one-day curated film festival and conference, taking place on June 5 at Hot Docs Ted Rogers Cinema in Toronto. The program includes:

Curated film screenings, presenting a selective program of fully AI-assisted and hybrid narrative films where AI supports story, character, and meaning.

Curated conversations, featuring filmmakers and invited guests in focused talks examining authorship, narrative intent, and creative process in AI-assisted filmmaking.

We welcome submissions from filmmakers working in fiction, animation, and narrative-driven hybrid forms, whether fully AI-assisted or combining AI with traditional production methods. Submission does not guarantee selection; all films are reviewed through a curated selection process.

Filmmakers selected for Cinema Shift Festival can expect a curated theatrical presentation and a focused conference environment that treats AI-assisted filmmaking as a serious cultural and cinematic practice.

The festival recognizes that copyright frameworks around AI-assisted production are evolving. Cinema Shift does not require disclosure of training data. Filmmakers are responsible for the lawful and ethical use of AI tools in accordance with applicable terms.

A really well put together festival with the right combination of speakers and films. There were plenty of nuggets of wisdom about the future of AI in filmmaking, and the mixer afterwards was terrific. Getting the chance to meet and talk with the other filmmakers was equal parts exhilarating and humbling. Cinema Shift was a class act from start to finish, and I hope I have the opportunity to attend again.

  • My film The Seeded Dream was selected for Cinema Shift AI Film Festival, and although I unfortunately couldn’t attend in person, I had a wonderful experience with the festival.

The communication with the organizers and team was excellent throughout, and I felt very welcomed and supported. I was truly honored to have my film shown as part of the first AI film festival in Canada, which felt like a meaningful and exciting milestone.

The festival took place at the Hot Docs Ted Rogers Cinema in Toronto, which is a wonderful venue. From everything I saw, the event seemed very well organized, thoughtful, and professionally run.

I’m grateful to have been included and would happily submit again in the future.

  • We are truly excited to win 2 Awards at the first edition of Cinema Shift. The Festival ran for the first year but was all very professional and communicative. The organizers understand the value of a good film and are open minded to new ways of production that preserve human intention.
    Thanks to all the team!

  • This was an incredibly well organized festival as well as having a very diverse selection of films that were shown. It was inspiring to see all the different, global perspectives. Well done! Hard to believe it was just the inaugural edition. I look forward more in the years to come.
