Ca' Foscari Short Film Festival is the first European film festival managed by university students under the guidance of a staff of professors in film studies and professionals from the world of cinema. Our initiative results in an International Competition open to film students from all over the world and it has become an important landmark for those involved in film studies. We promote the diffusion of the achievements accomplished in the field of cinema and transmedia by cooperating with international cinema schools and distributors. Internationally relevant producers, cinema experts, directors and actors join us each year as members of the jury or as special guests.

Besides the main International Competition, Ca’ Foscari Short Film Festival includes the “Olga Brunner Levi” competition - centred on short movies directed by high school students focusing on “womanliness and music” theme -, the Levi International Competition of music videos directed by film school students or university students, the Carpenè Malvolti Script-Video Contest open to all directors and their staff who take part in the 12th edition of our festival in the International Competition and Music Video Competition sections, and the Le Giornate della Luce special competition to be held in Spilimbergo (PN, Italy, June 4th-12th).

The 12th edition of the Ca’ Foscari Short Film Festival will award the following prizes and special mentions:

First prize (with no ex-aequo condition) - International Competition
Levi Award (with no ex-aequo condition) for the best soundtrack (music, words, sound) - International Competition
National Museum of Cinema Special mention to the movie offering the most significant contribution to cinema as an expression of art - International Competition
Special mention Le Giornate della Luce - Best Photography - International Competition
Venezia, Murano, Burano Municipality “Pateh Sabally” Award to the most significant contribution to the multi-ethnicity issue movie
First prize (with no ex-aequo condition) - Ugo and Olga Levi International Music Video Competition
First prize (with no ex-aequo condition) – Olga Brunner Levi International High School Competition
Carpenè Malvolti Script-Video Contest – First prize (with no ex-aequo condition)

Rules & Terms

The Ca’ Foscari Short Film Festival is the short film festival organized by Ca’ Foscari University of Venice. The 12th edition will be held from 4th to 7th May 2022.

The Festival consists in:
1- The main International Competition of short films directed by film school students or university students;
2- The “Olga Brunner Levi” competition - centred on short movies directed by high school students focusing on “womanliness and music” theme;
3- The Levi International Competition of music videos directed by film school students or university students.
4- The Carpenè Malvolti Script-Video Contest submitted by all directors and their staff who take part in the International Competition and Music Video Competition sections. The best project will be awarded at the Ca’ Foscari Short Film Festival with € 3000 and evaluated for the possible production of a short film.
5- Le Giornate della Luce competition will be held in Spilimbergo (PN) from June 4th to 12th and will present an International Competition of short movies selected among those presented in the International Competition of the Ca’ Foscari Short Film Festival

Only films that meet the following conditions may be chosen for invitation in the official selection:
a) All films must not exceed 30 minutes in length.
b) All films must have been completed after January 1st, 2021;
c) All films must be submitted in digital format (HD video, preferably MOV or MP4 files, web links);
d) Non-English-language films must be subtitled in English.

The Carpenè Malvolti Script-Video Contest
Starting from his experiences recounted in the document which will be sent to all the directors of the selected movies, the submission consists in the proposal of an idea for the possible realization of a short film dedicated to Carpenè Malvolti by presenting a script, a storyboard and a video presentation of the project.

Le Giornate della Luce competition will be held in Spilimbergo (PN) from June 4th to 12th and will present an International Competition of short movies selected among those presented in the International Competition of the Ca’ Foscari Short Film Festival

The deadline for submissions is February 28th, 2022. Applicants may submit the film via Filmfreeway.com or to cafoscarishort@unive.it; Wetransfer, MyAirBridge, Dropbox, Vimeo and similar services can be used.
Applicants will be informed of the selection of their film by March 15th, 2022. Once the selection has been completed, no selected movie may be withdrawn from the Festival program.
The submission of the selected movies must be completed including the following:
a) A filled and signed PDF copy of the entry form the Festival staff will send when selected;
b) The film in digital format, or a link to a streaming copy of the movie, with English
dialogues/subtitles; a dialogue list must be included;
c) A teaser/trailer, or a one-minute extract of the movie, and 3 stills.

The Festival invites film directors of the main International Competition as its guests; we offer free Festival accreditation and free accommodation when available. Travel expenses are not covered.

Jury / Awards
The Artistic Director of the Festival appoints an International Jury of three members. No jury member may have been involved in the production or the promotion of any of the films included in the competition. The International Jury awards the Grand Prix, and the National Museum of Cinema Special mention.

The Ugo and Olga Levi Foundation appoints three juries respectively to award the first prize - “Olga Brunner Levi” competition, the first prize - International Competition of music videos, and the Best Soundtrack award - International Competition.

The Le Giornate della Luce appoints a jury to award the Best Photography special mention - International Competition

The Venezia, Murano, Burano Municipality appoints a jury to award the “Pateh Sabally” Award to the most significant contribution to the multi-ethnicity issue movie

The Carpenè Malvolti appoints a jury to award the Best Script-Video project

The submitted films will be preserved in Ca’ Foscari Short Film Festival Archive for further free screenings within University programs.
