We are Anthology IO Festival!
While mainstream platforms and studios recycle formulas, short film production continues to boom (with upwards of 110K shorts produced worldwide in 2023). However, less than 1% of these films gain meaningful exposure, and nearly 85% of them are unable to recoup costs. Studio IO aims to remodel this broken sector of cinema through a vetted curation of selected films, and provide a revolutionary profit-sharing opportunity that directly compensates creators.
We are working to build the first ecosystem where artistic risk is rewarded, a festival and streaming platform that elevates visionary voices while delivering sustainable returns.
We provide a curated, high-impact platform to empower independent filmmakers and creators with the exposure, resources, and sustainable revenue streams they need to thrive. Our festival is more than just screenings; it’s a launchpad for careers. Through premiere showcases and digital amplification, we connect bold storytellers with global audiences. We prioritize ad revenue sharing, sponsorship opportunities, and crowdfunding support to help creators sustain their craft.
We champion films that take risks, defy genres, and challenge audiences—because independent art should be seen, celebrated, and profitable. By fostering a collaborative community of filmmakers, film lovers, and industry leaders, we ensure that diverse voices are not just heard, but rewarded.
Together, we’re redefining what it means to succeed in film—one bold story at a time.
Founded by filmmaker, Jordan Burbank, Studio IO is a next-generation film exhibition and distribution platform that bridges the gap between short film festivals and streaming profitability. Unlike traditional models that exploit artists or prioritize mass appeal we combine:
Highly selective short film festival - accepting only 5-10% of submissions to establish prestige and discover groundbreaking work.
Revenue-sharing streaming platform - filmmakers earn revenue through paid advertisements, brand partnerships, as well as a tip jar feature to allow for direct payments to artists.
Filmmaker-first ecosystem - includes networking opportunities, industry connections, and resources to help artists thrive, in addition to IO creating original content to promote and connect creators to one another and our audiences.
Our Los Angeles-based operations launch with a digital festival and live screening in 2026, transitioning to a proprietary streaming app by 2030, designed to monetize short films at scale while compensating creators fairly. Which is as it should be.
We're creating a platform for filmmakers who refuse to conform—where bold vision matters more than connections, and where stories are judged solely on their artistic merit. This isn't just another festival; it's a curated showcase for work that challenges, provokes, and stays with audiences long after the credits roll. We're Seeking Films That Demonstrate:
Authentic Vision – Your perspective, unfiltered and steadfast.
Narrative Impact – Stories that elicit genuine emotion and leave a lasting impression.
Visual Distinction – A strong, deliberate aesthetic that elevates your storytelling.
Cultural Relevance – Work that engages with the world as it is, not as studios wish it to be.
Resourceful Execution – Proof that creativity thrives within constraints/limitations.
Diverse Perspectives – Voices & stories that expand our understanding of cinema
and the human condition.
AS A FILMMAKER, IS MY FILM RIGHT FOR STUDIO IO?
Studio IO is working to showcase filmmakers that take creative freedom to pursue their unique visions. We prioritize artistic expression over commercial formulas, urging
directors to take risks and explore unconventional narrative. We are looking for films
driven by a strong directorial voice. To provide a likeminded cultivated community of
up-and-coming directors, helping to create a culture and collection of unique artists
and works and collaborate together to create films that reflect their personal style and storytelling preferences.
Genre-Blurring Films: We aim for filmmakers to blend genres or defy genre conventions, that
offer a fresh perspective. (ie: they might combine elements of horror, drama, and dark comedy
within a single narrative.)
Narrative Risk-Taking: Unconventional narratives that challenge viewers, such as non-linear storytelling,
complex character studies, or ambiguous endings.
Cinematic Quality: We place a strong emphasis on the visual and technical quality of films. Focusing on projects that feature striking cinematography, distinctive production design, and innovative use of sound and music.
Diverse Storytelling: We aim to showcase stories from diverse perspectives, including those of marginalized communities. Films that explore a wide range of cultural, racial, and social issues, often highlighting voices that are underrepresented in mainstream cinema.
Complex Characters and Themes: Films featured with us generally have characters that are often deeply complex, grappling with personal, societal, and existential challenges. These films tend to explore themes of identity, trauma, mental health, and the human condition in a nuanced way.
Cultural Impact & Critical Acclaim: We aim to ensure the film collection holds significant cultural impacts, so its artists/works are elevated together in holding a collective audience that translates into a fanbase for them.
All our Official Selection films will receive the Official Laurel.
Winners will be announced at the end of the live event and winning films will receive their Certificate of Achievement. Our top winners will be screened at our live event screening in Los Angeles. Other selections will be screened online during a live streaming event. In addition, we offer all of our selections the opportunity to be a part of our Anthology IO collection.
Each film receives a specific promotional launch day on our streaming page that we aim to promote on social media and help get the word out about the filmmakers. Our goal is to work with filmmakers to help get their projects, new and old, some attention and hopefully some financial reimbursment from sharing in a majority percentage of ad revenue for their work. We especially want you to submit your favorite projects that are just lost on a hard drive or stuck with no additional views on a slow posting youtube page. We want to help.
We are currently still in the process of building out the grand prize and other awards from our sponsors and will update this section with more specifics soon.
We will be presenting awards for each of the categories for submission, along with our Grand Prize of Best Short Film that will include a $500 cash award.
We also will be awarding the following for the overall festival as well:
Best Director
Best Cinematography
Best Screenplay
Best Performance
Best Production Design
Best Editing
