Born 20th November 1986, in the small town of Burdwan, West Bengal (India), Moinak Guho finished his schooling from St. Xavier’s School and then graduated in Aircraft Engineering from Indian Institute of Aeronautics, New Delhi; followed by a job with Kingfisher Airlines for five long years.
Always keen to pursue art, he eventually answered his calling and switched fields by joining Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute, a national film school in Kolkata, and majored in Direction and Screenplay Writing, with scholarships. Since then, he’s made short films, both fiction and nonfiction, as part of his curriculum and also independently outside. His films have screened at festivals like MIFF, IDSFFK, VGIK Moscow, Film-School Fest Munich, IFFSA Toronto, Laceno d’oro Italy, Imagine India Madrid, Nottingham Arts Fest among many others. His diploma film ‘An Irrelevant Dialogue’ garnered nine awards and was streamed on MUBI (India) from July ’22 to December ’23.
He’s participated in the Cineuropa EUFF India Script Lab conducted in association with Dharmshala IFF, with his project ‘Last Letter Home’, under the mentorship of Domenico la Porta.
He's worked as an Assistant Director in eminent director Nishtha Jain's documentary "The Golden Thread"; in Naeem Mohaiemen's fiction film "Those Who Do Not Drown" and in couple of other short films. He was the Co-Writer and Associate Director in Krishnendu Bose's historical documentary "Bay of Blood." He's also assisted in TVCs.
Simultaneously, he’s been freelancing as a Screenwriter and has written / co-written commissioned full-length film scripts for filmmakers such as Anirban Datta, Bauddhayan Mukherji etc.
He's also written episodic synopses and story setups and campaign scripts while collaborating with other directors.
He offers his services as a Script Mentor to fellow filmmakers and has been a part of script reading teams for international screenplay festivals/competitions.
Additionally, he freelances as an Associate/ Assistant Director for independent fiction and nonfiction projects, besides making short films for NGOs and corporates. He's worked with organizations like Delhi Art Gallery, Goethe Institute Kolkata, Neptune Travels etc.
Lately, to enrich his practice with theory, he went back to studies and completed his M.A. in Film Studies from Jadavpur University, Kolkata.
His debut feature film is currently at the development stage looking for international co-production.
