We are veterans of many festivals and consider ourselves tolerant and appreciative of well meaing efforts, especilly in the new reality we find ourselves. The organizers of this festival bombarded us with specailized demands, at the last minute such as creation of separate publicity reels and were actually rude and I would say quite dismissive of our efforts in spite of our work at giving them what they needed including coming back from an off- grid trip to create the assets they needed. Then they said we were too late, in a very terse statement. One of the worst in terms of "attitude" and dismissiveness towards the hurculean efforts that filmmakers put into their work. Response from festival:

    Rodney,
We're sorry you feel this way, but let's be frank. You should have a few of these prepared before you enter any film festival season:
    1) an Electronic Press Kit
    2) a trailer for your film (should be part of your EKP)
    3) a featurette or any other clips ready (should be part of your EKP)
    4) presentable biographies and stills from the set (should be part of your EKP)
    5) a ready online screener for the festival presentation.

We emailed you twice about the general deadline to remind everyone, and even extended it for you, to submit only one of these, which is more than a reasonable ask -and should not be a "Herculean effort". While we usually accept the blame if we are in the wrong, in this instance, the liability was on you and your team for failing to provide us with simple deliverables, in due time.

On a further note, please do not take losing in an award category personally.

We wish you the best of luck in your future projects!

Honored to have attended this festival and met many kind and interesting people. Although the ceremony was not in person but via the internet, I felt a lot of affection and desire to organize things in the best possible way. Thank you.

Our documentary, "Voices from the Barrens: Native People, Blueberries and Sovereignty" had its world Premiere and launch from MIWAFF. This in itself was significant. In addition we found a warm and forward thinking group of artist, programmers, staff and fellow film makers of all genres interested in our film and how/why we created its story. I would add that this is a relatively new festival, and the Wreath Award process is different, that the filmmaker needs to understand. It does allow different kinds of recognitions. Also it uses a democratic process at all steps, therefore the process takes a bit longer, as it is not a cut and dry determination. We would also acknowledge the diversity of the programming, and the extension of the viewing period beyond the festival dates which in this virtual viewing environment is very helpful. All said, we hope that this festival continues to enlarge and include international film of all genres.

  • The MIWAFF was a excellent experience. Being completely virtual this year allowed to be more intimate and close to the Q & A presentations and films. The staff was very professional and helpful with all my needs. Thank you for acknowledging and nominating my film ‘Follow Leader’ at this years event. It was a privilege to be associated with the Montreal Independent Film Festival this year and I would love to help judge the competition next year.
