Welcome to the 2nd annual AI Film Festival Japan (AIFJ 2026) — Shaping the Future of Sight and Sound through Human-AI Co-creation.

Taking place on November 3, 2026, in the heart of Tokyo at the Tokyo Innovation Base (TIB), AI Film Festival Japan (AIFJ) stands as Asia's largest and Japan's first international film festival dedicated exclusively to the creative collaboration between human storytellers and artificial intelligence.

Our mission is to establish Tokyo as a global hub where pioneering filmmakers, musicians, technologists, and visionary audiences converge to explore the expanding frontiers of AI-driven cinematic arts. We champion diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI), actively seeking to empower creators from all backgrounds while rigorously navigating the ethical landscapes of generative technologies.

What's New for 2026? Introducing the "AI Film Music / Score" Category For the first time, AIFJ 2026 is introducing the groundbreaking AI Film Music / Score Category. As artificial intelligence revolutionizes not just visual generation but auditory experiences, we invite global music creators, sound designers, and AI artists to participate in a unique "Reverse Scoring" competition.

Participants will download a 1-to-3-minute "Official AIFJ Visual Asset" (featuring narrative or animation sequences) provided by the festival, and utilize generative AI tools to compose the ultimate original musical score tailored exclusively to the footage.

Furthermore, the Vocal Division of our new Music Category is proudly represented by "SIO", the virtual AI Ambassador of the immersive sci-fi festival LOOP 2126. SIO is conceptualized as a "Dream Catcher from another civilization who transforms human emotions into music".

Creators are challenged to produce vocal tracks inspired by SIO's 15-30 second image boards and concept videos, utilizing AI voice synthesis. The ultimate winning track will be officially adopted as SIO's anthem and will receive a grand debut performance at the next LOOP 2126 fes Main Stage in Tokyo.

Whether you are a traditional filmmaker augmenting your workflow with AI, an experimental digital artist, or a composer pushing the boundaries of generative audio, AIFJ 2026 is your platform to redefine storytelling.

All official selections will be screened at our live events in Tokyo and evaluated by a distinguished jury of film professionals, AI researchers, and music industry experts. Please note that the festival will not offer or pay screening fees. The festival retains the right to withhold awards if no entry meets the specific category standards.

Award Titles:

- Best AI Movie (Honoring excellence in story-driven filmmaking utilizing AI)
- Best AI Animation (Celebrating outstanding achievements in AI-assisted animated works)
- Best AI Creative (For non-genre works pushing the boundaries of form, process, and visual abstraction or hybrid films exploring AI as a medium and dialoguing with the machine)
- Best AI Film Music / Score (Awarded to the most emotionally resonant and technically impressive purely instrumental AI score synced to our Official Visual Asset)
- Best AI Vocal Track (The ultimate prize for AI-generated vocal song designated as the official track for the virtual artist SIO, using AI voice synthesis provided by the festival)

Please read the following rules carefully before submitting your project. Participation in the festival implies the unconditional acceptance of all provisions in these rules and terms. All information, eligibility guidelines, and rules are subject to change by AIFJ without prior notice.

1. Eligibility

Open to creators of all nationalities, ages, genders, and backgrounds.

Individual or group submissions are accepted.

Multiple submissions are allowed, and each work may be entered in multiple categories. The festival reserves the right to award works in different categories than those chosen by the submitter.

A brief synopsis and creator/filmmaker bio are required.

Entrants under 18 require valid parental consent.

All submitted works must have been completed on or after January 1, 2026. While premiere status is not mandatory, World, International, or Japan premieres are strongly preferred and will be given priority consideration.

Works with poor production quality or containing inappropriate content (extremist propaganda, hate speech, violence against a specific group, pornographic content) may be disqualified at the festival's discretion.

2. Submission Period

Opens: July 1, 2026 00:00 (JST)

Deadline: September 15, 2026 12:00 (JST)

3. AI Transparency and Generative AI Ethical Policy (Mandatory)

The festival accepts works that were made with substantial use of AI tools in their production or which illuminate the possible consequences of the AI revolution (e.g., beyond simple upscaling or noise reduction).

Mandatory Disclosure: You must meticulously list the specific AI tools, models, and platforms used (e.g., Midjourney, Google Veo, Runway, Kling, Suno, Udio) in your submission cover letter or project description.

No Tracing or Direct Imitation: Prompting that specifically targets and mimics the exact style of existing illustrators, film directors, musicians, or studios is strictly prohibited to mitigate copyright infringement risks.

Strict Ban on Unauthorized Voice Cloning: Using AI to clone the voice of real, existing singers or individuals without their explicit, documented consent is absolutely forbidden and will result in immediate disqualification. Deepfakes or synthesized representations of real people must include a clear disclaimer in the credits.

Ethical Models: Submissions relying on models explicitly known for illegal data scraping or piracy may be disqualified at the organizer's discretion.

4. Runtime / Format

[AI Creative Category - Narrative, Animation, Experimental]

Length: 90 seconds to 15 minutes

Format: MP4(H.264), MOV, Full HD, 4K

[AI Film Music Category - Score, Sound Track, Vocal Track]

6. Rights / Clearances / Warranty

I have read and agreed to the Official Rules and Terms & Conditions.

I understand and consent that excerpts from my film and still images may be used in the festival’s promotional materials across our websites, social media, YouTube, and partner platforms.

By submitting, you consent to the festival processing your personal data for all purposes concerning the festival operation.

  • The AI Film Festival Japan was a well-organized and inspiring event. We truly felt the team’s enthusiasm and belief in the future of AI cinema. We met many talented creators from around the world and experienced the festival’s core value first-hand : human + AI co-creation. A meaningful layover on Aki’s journey , brief, but full of emotion.

  • What an incredible experience. Chris and the rest of the organizers were incredibly professional and thoughtful. What's more, the event was very well organized, especially for a first year festival. The talks were thoughtful, the screenings were handled with care, and there were always short films playing in the side theater which made viewing a breeze. Hope to be back next year!
