Down East Flick Fest (DEFF) is a juried festival celebrating independent filmmaking that moves people, sparks conversation, and reflects the richness of our shared humanity.

Rather than organizing films primarily by traditional genres, DEFF celebrates the qualities that make stories memorable and meaningful. Our signature categories recognize films that embody distinct creative voices, cultural perspectives, and storytelling traditions.

These categories include Poetry Films, Storyteller Cinema, Southern Gothic and Southern Surreal, Sweet Tea Films, Moments That Matter, Community Impact Films, Child-friendly Films, Faith-based Films, and Unapologetic Films, celebrating filmmakers from marginalized, underrepresented, or culturally specific communities telling their own stories in their own voice.

Down East Flick Fest is a curated festival. Films are selected based on artistic merit, storytelling, technical execution, originality, and their contribution to the overall festival experience. While many outstanding films are submitted each year, selection is based on individual excellence and how each film contributes to the conversations, collections, and audience experience DEFF is creating.

Within these categories, our jurors recognize exceptional achievement through category honors and select signature awards that represent the highest ideals of Down East Flick Fest.

Down East Flick Fest recognizes outstanding achievement in independent filmmaking through Collection Awards, Signature Awards, and the Best of Fest Award.

The **Best of Fest Award** includes a cash prize, with the award amount announced each festival season.

DEFF's Signature Awards celebrate exceptional artistic achievement, authentic storytelling, and creative impact. They include the **Sweet Tea Award**, honoring stories rooted in place, people, and the enduring spirit of the South, and the **Community Impact Award**, recognizing films and filmmakers whose work inspires meaningful dialogue and positive change.

Award recipients receive official DEFF recognition, certificates, and promotional opportunities through festival channels. Additional awards, sponsored prizes, and special recognitions may vary by festival season.

  • Great festival! Very rewarding experience for our cast and crew, and we thank Down East Flick Fest for their hard work putting this festival together every year.

  • What a waste of time and money. We drove 900 miles to attend a poorly organized ripoff. No lanyard badges, no tee shirts, no Q&A, hosts totally ignorant of technical requirements; a complete disaster. Avoid this pathetic excuse for a film festival with all your strength, all your heart and all your wallet. This debacle was a repulsive, repugnant, insulting and embarrassing disaster. Stay home!
