We are Kendal Mountain Festival.

Established in 1980, we bring together thousands of outdoor enthusiasts from across the world to celebrate the best stories from the world of adventure, nature, environment, and mountain culture.

Our annual November Festival is a wonderful amalgamation of content; a breathtaking film programme, a jam-packed speaker lineup, and a heart-warming congregation of creatives and industry professionals.

At the core of our Festival is our film programme, curated from entries submitted to our annual International Film Competition. We screen feature-length films as stand-alone events and short films curated into themed collections.

Successful filmmakers will be invited to join us over the Festival weekend. We provide two nights of accommodation for up to two people, opportunities to present your film to our audience, filmmaker passes to events, industry workshops and talks, and the chance to network with over 150 filmmakers as well as industry professionals and outdoor brand partners from around the world.

Kendal is more than our November Festival; successful films will be considered to feature on our UK and International Tours and welcomed to our Kendal Mountain Player – a year-round digital offering of films and media.

Films are judged against twelve competitive categories by a panel of film and outdoor experts, and in the case of the People’s Choice, the audience itself.

The winner's are announced live at the Kendal Mountain Festival Film Awards ceremony. A trophy sculpted by Chamonix-based artist Andy Parkin will be awarded for the best film in each category.

E) ACCESSIBILITY
In order for the Festival to be accessible to all, we encourage all filmmakers to create additional materials that make their work accessible to those with sensory impairment.

In addition to subtitling (please see above) we suggest the following:

Descriptive captioning; this is a transcription of the film's key non-dialogue audio cues (e.g., sound effects, music cues), rather than just the film's dialogue. This feature is also referred to as SDH (Subtitles for the d/Deaf and hard of hearing).

Audio description (AD); this is an audio commentary that aims to describe body language, expressions, and movements to blind or partially sighted audience members.

Audio described films should be uploaded in both the original and AD versions.

If you already have these assets ready for your film, please submit via the third option on FilmFreeway for a discounted rate. If you are planning to create these assets but they are not yet finished, please submit via the feature/short film category and email us at info@mountainfest.co.uk to let us know when you expect them to be completed.

My first time at this festival and what a surprise. I'm not a mountaineer but I felt welcomed and so much variety of subjects to engage in. I was delighted that my very short animation , Bitterns was selected as part of the digital arts programme and was shown in amongst a lovely collection of films. Great , quick communication and now I've discovered this festival almost on my doorstep I'm sure I'll visit again. Thankyou for all the immense work to keep this real festival going.

One of the most special film festivals in the entire world. The INCREDIBLE team - Jenny, Jen, Faye, Indus, Dom - to name just a few made every single moment joyous. They are hardworking, passionate and dedicated and that shines out of them. Communication was excellent every step of the way.
Our screening and panel were brilliantly hosted and curated with an excellent selection of films and talks, not to mention being totally sold out! The parties were glorious, as was our morning dip in Lake Windermere. But most of all, this is a festival built on community and you feel that in every single aspect. I am so honoured we had our European premiere of Swim Sistas at Kendal, overjoyed that we won Best Short Film and I am already missing our magical weekend.

I hope to return time and time again.

Wow! What a way to end a 15 month long festival run with my film Climbing into Life! Our 19th and final festival was amazing!! Faye, Indus, Jen and a host of other volunteers are some of the most impressive I have met. The communication and attention to detail was excellent. I felt well cared for and there were so many events to choose from, each worthwhile. I loved that you had shuttle service to and from the hotel. Thanks Lindsay! It made it very easy for me to get around. Three screenings and Q&A's were welcomed and went very well. Thank you to Pete and Beth for the great interview questions. So impressed with the breadth of this particular festival and Kendal was so welcoming. I hope I can come again. I made some great connections. Thank you.

I’ve attended this fantastic festival for years, but this was my first time attending as a filmmaker. Showing a film at Kendal is an incredible experience and the passion and support from the organisers makes it even more special.
