Thank you to our friends and fellow filmmakers! KIXFF is on hold for 2017 as we work on making it better. Join us on Facebook and Twitter to stay in touch about our upcoming local events and an exciting 2018.

“Waygukin” is the Korean word for foreigner. I’d prefer the word “expat.”
1.5 million foreigners live in South Korea. Nearly half are Chinese, 9.3% of those are American, while many Japanese, Thai, and Vietnamese call Korea “home” as well. Either way we’re here to stay… and often bored and drinking. So why not a festival?

Who we are:
KIXFF is run by a small group of expat filmmakers and Seoul Players, a non-profit theatre company producing shows in Korea since 2001. Expat film making in Seoul has made inroads to the Korean market, working in local and international television and film productions as well as producing music videos and commercials.

Our festival’s objectives:

For Filmmakers: Our focus is nomads and no-budget shooters. Dslr's, duct tape and elbow grease. Filmmakers wary of festivals' back door dealings. Transparency and feedback.
Shelling out $30 (on average) for a film entry deserves transparency. At a minimum, you should know when a film is accepted or not. A quick note of what programmers think would be pretty awesome as well. That's why at KIXFF, everyone gets feedback. Period.

For Screenwriters: Again, transparency. And feedback. And live performance in the form of staged readings. And audience awards. And selected screenplays get a video of the performance.

For the Audience: Programming and defining the “Expat” experience. In this case “expat” would be defined as someone who has left their country of origin and have made their home elsewhere. Examples might include films whose heroes are not native to the culture, i.e. Mexican immigrants laboring illegally in the USA. This could also be the designation of the filmmaker. Someone with residency away from their home country.

For the community: A great freaking party. The expat film scene is a thriving connected network. Our goal is to connect Expats and Koreans and the audience in parties and performances and concerts and workshops in the hopes of building long lasting networks.

Rules & Terms

Please make sure to read all of the festival rules as well as the terms and conditions.
Each submission must have its own submission fee. Fee waivers MAY be considered if the filmmaker goes out of their way to make us feel really awesome about doing it. (Youtube videos with songs about how awesome we are have a pretty good shot at a discount.)
All works must be submitted as an online screener (Vimeo preferred). ONLINE SCREENERS > DVDs. (1995 called…)
If you curmudgeons insist... DVD entries must postmarked by the deadline date of the entry period in which a film was submitted. Or you could send us your film on VHS tapes. Or Laserdiscs. WE REFUSE RESPONSIBILITY FOR PHYSICAL MEDIA. THAT INCLUDES WATCHING THEM.
Screeners will not be returned. Please do not send self-addressed stamped envelopes. However, if you do, we’ll write you a nice thank you note.
Eligible works must have been completed within 3 years of the selection date. Feature There are no premiere requirements for films. We do not discriminate against films that are available to the public online.
Works in progress WILL be accepted for submission. Please include information as to what still needs to be completed (color correction, score, etc.).
If you want to replace your original submission with an upgraded version, email our programming director with "Replacement Copy" in the subject heading. Any judging that was done with the original submission will not change. Any future judging will be done with the new copy. If judging is completed on your film, the new film will only be considered if you draw us a really nice picture of our programming director on a Luck dragon battling a nine-armed Phillip Seymour Hoffman.
Only independently produced films and videos are appropriate for this competition. Artists must have final creative control over their work to be eligible.
KIXFF DOES NOT PAY SCREENING FEES. By submitting your film via FilmFreeway you acknowledge that the festival will not pay to present your work.
Be kind. Be honest. Don’t be douchebags. If you think you have a film that may not meet our requirements, contact us. If the film is great, maybe we can work something out. Don’t send us your commercials or lie about premiere statuses. Don’t lie about your budget or your expat status. This fest is for low-budget indies and nomad filmmakers. If we find out, we’ll make a penis-shaped puppet of you and mock you mercilessly in the confines of our office.

TERMS AND CONDITIONS
By entering your film for consideration for the 2015 Korea Indie and Expat Film Festival (henceforth KIXFF), you authorize that your work is cleared for festival exhibition and accept full legal responsibility for the intellectual property therein. Entry into the festival constitutes permission to exhibit your work at the 2015 KIXFF. KIXFF is also hereby granted the right to utilize an excerpt from any film submitted or accepted for exhibition at the Festival for promotional purposes. The undersigned shall indemnify and hold harmless KIXFF from and against any and all claims, liabilities, losses, damages, and expenses (including but not limited to attorney's fees, and costs of the court) which may be incurred by reason of any claim involving copyright, trademark, credits, publicity, screening, and loss of or damage to the screening videos entered. KIXFF may opt to withdraw your work from the festival at any time for any reason. We’re serious about the penis puppets. Ask us to pay to screen your film and see what happens.

We participated in the Festival in the No Budget Feature Competition. The KIXFF is a growing film festival with a nice team behind trying to do the best. I think this festival is going to expand with time. They've a really serious team of programmers and the jury was also nice.
Couldn't attend but they keep me posted everyday.
We hope to be there in next years!
