FENDA – Experimental Festival of Film Arts, a new international encounter dedicated to experimental film arts, announces the call for submissions for its International Competition. The festival was supposed to take place in Belo Horizonte, Brazil, in 2020, but due to the COVID-19 crisis, we had to postpone the event. Now, with the advance of vaccination in Brazil and with a safer sanitary situation, we have set a new date for the event. FENDA will take place from the 25th to the 29th of May 2022. The call for submissions is now open from January 3 to 18.
Over the course of five days, we will experience screenings in movie theaters, installations, performances, conferences, film concerts, workshops and outdoor screenings. The event seeks to expand the possibilities of film beyond traditional formats and spaces, creating a zone of creative contagions between cinema and the visual arts, historical works and the current production, analogic and digital, filmmaking and critical thinking. Bringing together some of the most inventive works of contemporary audiovisual production and curated programs with films and installations in Super 8, 16mm and digital, the festival will promote encounters between international and local artists, celebrating free experimentation and daring expression. The festival is organized through public funding via Lei Municipal de Incentivo à Cultura de Belo Horizonte. All events have free admission.

FENDA is a non-profit event. We are a group of people working on a tight budget, trying to create an experimental festival of film arts in Belo Horizonte. We do not charge any kind of submission fee. On the other hand, due to our restricted budget and the current economic situation in Brazil, we cannot offer any kind of financial compensation for the selected artworks. Also, there will be no kind of financial awards. We can offer, though, an excellent team of programmers, who will watch your work with attention and care. We can also offer a jury of experimental filmmakers, scholars and art critics. This jury will be responsible to point out the best works of the festival and attribute symbolic awards.

What is FENDA?
FENDA – Experimental Festival of Film Arts, a new international encounter dedicated to experimental film arts, announces the call for submissions for its International Competition. The festival was supposed to take place in Belo Horizonte, Brazil, in 2020, but due to the COVID-19 crisis, we had to postpone the event. Now, with the advance of vaccination in Brazil and with a safer sanitary situation, we have set a new date for the event. FENDA will take place from the 25th to the 29th of May 2022.
What kind of films are we looking for?
FENDA is interested in experimental and avant-garde audiovisual work in a broad sense. We can adopt a definition made by experimental pioneer Germaine Dulac in 1932: “any film whose technique, used for a renewed expressiveness of image and sound, breaks with established traditions to search out, in the strictly visual and auditory domain, new emotional chords”. We want works that other people might consider “too weird”, “too small”, or “too difficult”. We specially want those works that might raise the question: “Is this cinema?”. We use the expression “film arts” on purpose, because we want to expand the current conception of what is cinema. We are interested in artworks that are restlessly seeking for new ways of expression through image and sound.
What films can apply?
In practical terms, we have an International Competition, accepting submissions of audiovisual works up to 30 minutes in length. Artists and producers from all over the world are invited to submit. Brazilian artists are also invited to apply for the International Competition, since we will not have a separated showcase for Brazilian artists. Works completed after January 1, 2021 are eligible for consideration. Submissions are open from January 3 to January 18, 2022. For our first edition, we will have screenings in 16mm and Super 8 during the festival, but regarding the International Competition, we can only accept digital screening formats, unless the artist/producer can provide transportation. Each artist can send only one work. We cannot consider two or more works by the same artist.
