The Chiaroscuro International Film Festival is a new short film competition with a public screening event in September 2024 in Bergamo.

We firmly believe that film festivals continue to provide an ideal setting for the cultural and communal celebration of cinema. Our mission is to support the global film industry by encouraging outstanding films worldwide, fostering networking opportunities between authors and producers/distributors, all within the captivating frame offered by the city of Bergamo.

We are looking for films that are able to take us around the world we're living in, through the eyes of authors of any gender, nationality, age and ethnicity, whatever their budget is.
We're committed to showcase different genres and approaches to filmmaking, from fiction films to documentary and animation. We pay special attention to the authors of the future: young directors that are capable of shooting films that address social issues, especially related to the labour market: discovering and promoting independent filmmakers is at the very center of our efforts!

Chiaroscuro will take place at Spazio Polaresco, a dynamic cultural hub that hosts events, performances and music. It stands as an inclusive space open to all, situated in Bergamo: a significant cinematic center and the Italian Capital of Culture in 2023.
This collaboration is possible thanks to Rete DOC, that manages the venue. Spazio Polaresco encapsulates the spirit of our festival.

The festival's name pays homage to Bergamo and one of its most illustrious citizens, Caravaggio, the master of the chiaroscuro technique. Renowned for his adept use of strong contrasts between light and dark that influence the entire composition, Caravaggio is hailed as a pioneer of modern cinematography. The interplay of light and dark, black and white, symbolizes the very origins of cinema.

Il Chiaroscuro International Film Festival è una nuova competizione di cortometraggi con una proiezione pubblica prevista a settembre 2024 a Bergamo.

Crediamo fermamente che i festival cinematografici continuino a offrire un contesto ideale per la celebrazione culturale e comunitaria del cinema. Pertanto, la nostra missione è dedicata a sostenere l'industria cinematografica mettendo in mostra film da tutto il mondo, favorendo opportunità di networking tra autori e produttori/distributori, all'interno dell'affascinante cornice offerta dalla città di Bergamo.

Cerchiamo film in grado di portarci in giro per il mondo in cui viviamo, attraverso gli occhi di autori di ogni genere, nazionalità, età ed etnia, indipendentemente dal loro budget. Ci impegniamo a mostrare differenti generi e approcci alla produzione cinematografica, dai cortometraggi di finzione a documentari e film d’animazione. Prestiamo particolare attenzione agli autori del futuro: giovani registi capaci di girare film che affrontano questioni sociali, soprattutto legate al mercato del lavoro. Scoprire e promuovere registi indipendenti è al centro dei nostri sforzi!

Chiaroscuro si svolgerà presso lo Spazio Polaresco, un dinamico centro culturale che ospita eventi, spettacoli e musica. Rappresenta uno spazio inclusivo aperto a tutti, situato a Bergamo: un importante centro cinematografico e Capitale Italiana della Cultura nel 2023. Questa collaborazione è possibile grazie a Rete DOC, che gestisce la location. Lo Spazio Polaresco incarna lo spirito del nostro festival.

Il nome del festival rende omaggio a Bergamo e a uno dei suoi cittadini più illustri, Caravaggio, maestro della tecnica del chiaroscuro. Rinomato per il suo abile utilizzo di forti contrasti tra luce e ombra che influenzano l'intera composizione, Caravaggio è considerato il pioniere della cinematografia moderna. Il gioco di chiaro e scuro, bianco e nero, simboleggia le radici stesse del cinema.

A committee appointed by the organizers will conduct the selection process for the submitted works, announcing the shortlist of films that have advanced to the final round. The Official Selection will be unveiled on our website and official channels by September 9th, 2024, with the films featured on this list scheduled for screening during the Festival.

Una giuria nominata dagli organizzatori condurrà il processo di selezione per le opere presentate, annunciando la lista ristretta dei film che hanno superato la fase finale. La Selezione Ufficiale sarà pubblicata sul nostro sito e sui canali ufficiali entro il 9 settembre 2024, con i film inclusi in questa lista che verranno proiettati durante il Festival.

Rules & Terms

Art. 1 - Filmmakers of any age, gender and nationality are invited to submit films. They can submit more than one work, but the payment of the submission fee is required for each film submitted.
Art. 2 - Any genre or subject is accepted. Every short film must include English subtitles (unless the spoken language is Italian).
Art. 3 - Entry fees are non-refundable.
Art. 4 - Entries are accepted exclusively through FilmFreeway.
Art. 5 - Films must have been produced after January 1st, 2021.
Art. 6 - All filmmakers will be notified by email and directors whose short films have been selected are invited as participants.
Art. 7 - All winners, official selections and finalists will be contacted and receive laurels and certificates. Everything will also be listed on our website and social media.
Art. 8 - Short films must not exceed 20 minutes in length, including credits.
Art. 10 - Submitting in the Students category must provide an ID that certifies student status.
Art. 11 - We do discount codes for distribution companies. To request, please contact us by email.
Art. 12 - There is no strict rule for premieres. All works are accepted, as long as they are not already available online.
Art. 13 - Chiaroscuro International Film Festival will not be held responsible for any unauthorized inclusion of: any copyrighted and/or trademarked content or materials within or relating to the submitted project, including any content or materials that are or may become the basis for any Third Party Claim/s for copyright infringement and/or trademark infringement, trademark dilution or unfair competition. It’s the sole responsibility of the Submitter to secure permission from the rights holders of any and all copyrighted and/or trademarked content or materials included within the film.
Art. 14 - The festival has the rights to utilize excerpts of it (trailer/teaser/poster/stills) for promotional purposes only. We will not in any circumstances make your movie available online.
Art. 15 - They grant full and unrestricted permission for Chiaroscuro to screen the film/video at times of the festivals.
Art. 16 - The director, or producer, accepts and understands that the festival will do everything possible to present the video in the best possible manner, but the Festival is not responsible for any malfunctions during the screening.
Art. 17 - By submitting your project you declare that you have read, understood and accepted all rules & terms.
Art. 18 - The jury's decisions on the selected works are unquestionable and they cannot provide any feedback on the reasons for the outcome of the selections.

Art. 1 - Sono invitati a presentare film i registi di qualsiasi età, genere e nazionalità. Possono presentare più di un lavoro, ma è richiesto il pagamento dell’iscrizione per ogni film presentato.
Art. 2 - È accettato qualsiasi genere o argomento. Ogni cortometraggio deve includere sottotitoli in inglese (a meno che la lingua parlata non sia l'italiano).
Art. 3 - Il costo di iscrizione non è rimborsabile.
Art. 4 - Le iscrizioni sono accettate esclusivamente tramite FilmFreeway.
Art. 5 - I film devono essere stati prodotti dopo il 1° gennaio 2021.
Art. 6 - Tutti i registi saranno informati via e-mail e i registi dei cortometraggi selezionati sono invitati a partecipare.
Art. 7 - Tutti i vincitori, i selezionati e i finalisti saranno contattati e riceveranno i certificati. La comunicazione avverrà anche sul nostro sito web e sui social media.
Art. 8 - I cortometraggi non devono superare i 20 minuti, compresi i titoli di coda.
Art. 10 - Chi si iscrive nella categoria Studenti deve fornire un documento di identità che certifica lo status di studente.
Art. 11 - Forniamo codici sconto per le case di distribuzione. Per richiederli, potete contattarci via e-mail.
Art. 12 - Non ci sono regole per le anteprime. Tutti i lavori sono accettati, purché non siano già disponibili online.
Art. 13 - Il Chiaroscuro International Film Festival non sarà responsabile per l'inclusione non autorizzata di contenuti o materiali coperti da copyright e/o marchi registrati relativi al progetto presentato, compresi contenuti o materiali che sono o possono diventare la base di richieste di terzi per violazione del copyright e/o violazione del marchio o concorrenza sleale. È responsabilità esclusiva del Presentatore ottenere il permesso dai detentori dei diritti su qualsiasi contenuto o materiale coperto da copyright e/o marchio registrato incluso nel film.
Art. 14 - Il festival ha il diritto di utilizzare estratti dei film (trailer/teaser/poster/foto) per scopi promozionali. In nessuna circostanza renderemo disponibile il vostro film online.
Art. 15 - Concedono il permesso completo e illimitato a Chiaroscuro di proiettare il film/video durante i festival.
Art. 16 - Il regista o il produttore accetta e comprende che il festival farà tutto il possibile per presentare il video nel miglior modo possibile, ma non siamo responsabili per eventuali malfunzionamenti durante la proiezione.
Art. 17 - Presentando il tuo progetto, dichiari di aver letto, compreso e accettato tutte le regole e i termini.
Art. 18 - Le decisioni della giuria sulle opere selezionate sono incontestabili e non devono fornire alcun feedback sulle ragioni dell'esito delle selezioni.
