Experimental cinema represents the most radical means of expression within motion-picture based visual culture at an international level. In recent years many film festivals, conferences, journals, digital archives, workshops, community labs and filmclubs targeting experimental cinema have skyrocketed in popularity, which are now constituting a network of international strongholds and distribution centres. Despite the international tendency, experimental filmmaking in Hungary is practically non-existent. It's severly underrepresented status marks the biggest gap in contemporary Hungarian visual culture.
Celluloidra Revolverrel aims to organise Hungarian experimental cinema.
Celluloidra Revolverrel is organising a complex experimental film expo in partnership with Kaleidoscope House (http://kaleidoszkophaz.hu/index.php/en/a-haz) and Blue Danube Film Festival (https://filmfreeway.com/BlueDanube) in the summer of 2024. The event will consist of three interconnected activities (film festival – academic conference – workshops), for which the applications are open until 17.07.2024.
One of the primary activities of Celluloidra Revolverrel is to provide a platform for creators, with the aim of supporting yet to be recognised national and international experimental filmmakers. That being said, Celluloidra Revolverrel is launching an online entry call for emerging experimental filmmakers. Submitted films will be nominated through a pre-selection process. The nominated films will then be screened at the event, where they will be reviewed and awarded by our academic jury.
Regarding Entry categories; the enlisted categories - which are on right, under Categories & Entry Fees - are primarily intended as indicative guidelines. Submitted works that are slightly related to the enlisted categories, or which are more difficult to classify, are also prone for nomination.
For a brief guide in terms of categories, see the online visualisation of Gregory Zinman's book on American experimental film, the Handmade Cinema Project.
Participators interested in hosting conference lectures/workshop activities at the event, can register at http://www.celluloidrarevolverrel.hu/
All shortlisted films will receive their certificates and peer reviews on the spot. If the applicant is unable to attend the event, the documents will be sent via e-mail. Celluloidra Revolverrel is a horizontally organised event, therefore every shortlisted film will receive a symbolic award. This will be paid by bank transfer immediately after the event.
