The First and Only International Experimental Film Festival in Hungary.

Experimental cinema represents the most radical means of expression within motion-picture based visual culture at an international level. In recent years many film festivals, conferences, journals, digital archives, workshops, community labs and filmclubs targeting experimental cinema have skyrocketed in popularity, which are now constituting a network of international strongholds and distribution centres. Despite the international tendency, experimental filmmaking in Hungary is practically non-existent. It's severly underrepresented status marks the biggest gap in contemporary Hungarian visual culture. ‍With the exception of a few isolated artistic practices, marginalized publishing and editorial initiatives, and a narrow circle of academic researchers, the field long appeared to be lagging behind. This tendency was decisively reversed in 2024 by the unexpected and game changing emergence of Celluloidra Revolverrel.

Within a short period of time, Celluloidra Revolverrel became an internationally recognized scholarly and artistic platform, whose primary aim is the reorganization of contemporary Hungarian experimental cinema and its integration into international scientific and artistic discourse. Since its launch, the domestic presence of experimental film has shown a marked strengthening. This is evidenced both by the intensification of its academic discourse and by the spread of more popular formats, including the proliferation of experimental film mini-festivals and newly established experimental sections in national film reviews.

As the flagship of this upward trend, Celluloidra Revolverrel has set itself the goal of further consolidating this process and elevating it to an international level. In this spirit, it is organizing a celebratory, large-scale three-year anniversary event, within the framework of which it will realize its most comprehensive professional film symposium to date.

The event is being realized in partnership with Kaleidoscope House Cultural Center (http://kaleidoszkophaz.hu/index.php/en/a-haz) in the late summer of 2025. The event will consist of three interconnected activities: film festival, academic conference and workshops, for which the applications are open until 01.09.2026.

One of the primary activities of Celluloidra Revolverrel is to provide a platform for creators, with the aim of supporting yet to be recognised and arrived national and international experimental filmmakers. That being said, Celluloidra Revolverrel is launching an online entry call for emerging experimental filmmakers. Submitted films will be nominated through a pre-selection process. The nominated films will then be screened at the event, where they will be reviewed by our academic jury.

Regarding Entry categories; the enlisted categories - which are on right, under Categories & Entry Fees - are primarily intended as indicative guidelines. Submitted works that are slightly related to the enlisted categories, or which are more difficult to classify, are also prone for nomination.

Participators interested in hosting conference lectures/workshop activities at the event, can register at http://www.celluloidrarevolverrel.hu/

All shortlisted films will receive their certificates and peer reviews on the spot. Celluloidra Revolverrel is a horizontally organised event, therefore we do not "rank" our nominated films. In this respect, the festival functions mainly as a showcase event and its primary aim is to represent the best of Hungarian and International and experimental cinema in the region.

1. Celluloidra Revolverrel accepts all kinds of cinematographic works that have not yet been presented. We are able to accept works that have been previously presented, provided that the time interval between the final completion of the work and the date of the event does not exceed 12 years. I can't answer the questions because I wasn't there myself.
My impression is that it is a very ambitious festival. It was the first edition, and I hope that the festival can continue. The festival also sent pictures to the participants of the festival. The impression from the pictures is that there were many interested spectators and a very good atmosphere at the festival, and there was also a supporting program that was definitely exciting to read.
