Purpose
To celebrate and amplify cinematic stories that connect people to the rivers, landscapes, cultures, and natural history of the Colorado Plateau—fostering curiosity, stewardship, and meaningful connection to place.

Mission
The Bowline Film Festival curates and presents exceptional films and programming that elevate adventure storytelling, natural history, conservation, river culture, and Indigenous and local voices of the Colorado Plateau. In connection with the John Wesley Powell River History Museum, we provide inclusive screenings, filmmaker conversations, educational workshops, community events, and river-based experiences that inspire learning, dialogue, and active stewardship of the region’s waterways and landscapes.

Vision
We envision the Bowline Film Festival as the premier annual gathering where storytellers, scientists, river users, Indigenous communities, and conservation leaders converge to deepen public understanding and catalyze long-term protection and celebration of the Colorado Plateau’s rivers, landscapes, and cultures—ensuring their resilience for generations to come.

The Bowline Film Festival, held each March in Green River, Utah in partnership with the John Wesley Powell River History Museum, curates films that explore rivers, landscapes, conservation, adventure, and Indigenous and local cultures of the Colorado Plateau. We welcome documentaries, narratives, shorts, and experimental work that deepen public understanding, inspire stewardship of waterways and wild places, and elevate authentic voices from the region. Programming includes screenings, filmmaker Q&As, museum collaborations, educational workshops, and river-based events. Submit your film to be part of a celebration of story, place, and powerful conservation-minded filmmaking.

The Bowline Film Festival recognizes selected films with various laurels, accolades, and prizes. No cash prize is awarded.

Accepted film obligations
Provide final screening copy, high-resolution poster and stills, press kit materials, and any requested metadata by the deadline.

If invited, attend the festival (in person or virtually) for Q&As or panels when possible.
Notify the festival immediately of any distribution deals, broadcast agreements, or scheduling conflicts that may affect screening.

Films may not be withdrawn after acceptance without written agreement. Withdrawals after the final program is set may incur liability for shipping or advertising costs.

Filmmakers should supply content warnings for potentially triggering material. Bowline reserves the right to include advisories in promotional materials and at screenings.

The festival encourages submitters to provide closed captions and transcripts. Where feasible, the festival will provide accessibility accommodations (captioned screenings, audio description) and will coordinate with filmmakers as needed.

Bowline prioritizes equitable access. Fee waivers are available for Indigenous filmmakers, Colorado Plateau residents, students, and community groups. Include waiver instructions on FilmFreeway (or provide contact/email for requests).

By submitting, filmmakers permit the festival to use up to five film images, poster art, trailer clips, and metadata for promotion of the festival and the film’s screening. Credit information will always be included.
Filmmakers should provide press contacts or publicists for media inquiries.

Technical questions and final delivery instructions will be provided by Bowline’s Technical Director. Provide a technical contact email and a physical shipping address for hard drives if needed (e.g., John Wesley Powell River History Museum technical liaison).

Bowline Film Festival is not responsible for loss or damage to submitted materials in transit. Insurance for shipped media is recommended.
Submission constitutes acceptance of these rules.
