VRBOSKA FILM FESTIVAL is a 4-day festival of Croatian and international film, which took place for the first time in August 2024. Vrboska is a picturesque, seaside town on the island of Hvar, and we want to bring the art of cinema into this beautiful setting. Our goal is to promote exceptional emerging filmmakers, educate the local audience on film art, and provide a 3-day stop motion animation workshop for children.

Besides the film program & the workshop, in 2026 we decided to organize an international 4-day screenwriting workshop for filmmakers with experience in short films or that are at a point of transitioning into feature filmmaking. We are looking for emerging filmmakers who have already created at least one short film, that are currently developing their next project or that are ready to make steps towards creating a first feature film. The projects will receive a tailored feedback from mentors as well. The application is free but the selected participants will be asked to contribute a participation fee of 250 € which will cover accommodation for 5 nights on Island Hvar and one meal per day as well as organizational costs. Deadline for submitting is 25 of May 2026, 23:59 CEST. Submit HERE: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1UtdOzEPATncIIyrDbZp5qNfWVGAf2z4y2Cl0Cw-phug/preview

The festival competition program consists of short fiction and animated films. Three expert members of our jury will award the best film in each of the two categories. Additionally, a selection of short films and one feature fiction film will be screened outside the competition.

The children's animation workshop will start on the second day in the afternoon hours, at the new Fisherman's museum in Vrboska, and will continue for the next two days with an extra screening of the final workshop movie on the final day of the festival

The screenings will all be at the open-air location in front of the Tvrđava (Fortress), starting from 9 p.m. The entrance is free. After the screenings, each night, there will be a gathering with the filmmakers at the local bar nearby, along the seafront.

On the opening night, the main program will consist of a couple of short films in competition.

The second night will be reserved for the short fiction and animated films in the competition, and, of course, the gathering with the filmmakers.

On the third and closing night, there will be an award ceremony for the best short fiction and animated film, along with screenings of several short films outside the competition.

A three-member jury of film authors and artists gives out statuettes of the “Palm tree”, a symbol of Vrboska and our festival, to the best short fiction film, the best short animated film, the best script with the audience award for the best movie.

Vrboska Film Festival is an international short fiction and animation film festival, which means that to be selected for the competition program, you may only apply fiction and animated films up to 30 minutes. Applicants must be produced within the last two years. The festival pays special attention to the storytelling aspect of the films, thus when choosing films, priority will be given to those with authentic, interesting, important themes, and/or innovative approaches to screenwriting.

*All films must have burn-in English subtitles.*

  • In one word: Perfect!

Perfect atmosphere and ambiance at this small festival with a big heart—and even bigger ambition to become one of the must-visit festivals—in the real gem of Vrboska on the island of Hvar!

I’m so grateful I could participate and showcase my work, especially in such a special place.

The team behind the Vrboska Film Festival is both friendly and professional: they booked us a stay, organised lunch, and gave us clear instructions for everything we asked about.

The festival’s location is unique and cozy, and the small fishing town of Vrboska is a true gem to explore and enjoy—with friendly locals, great food, and fantastic scenery.

I’m already looking forward to coming back!
