[Festival Overview]

The Tochigi International Film Festival, founded by filmmaker Hirofumi Watanabe (Ohtawara Guto-sha), a native of Ohtawara City, Tochigi Prefecture, aims to reignite the presence of cinema in the region and serve as a cultural bridge connecting Tochigi with innovative talents from around the world.

At its inaugural edition in 2025, the main International Short Film Competition received a total of 146 submissions from over 20 countries. From these, 44 carefully selected films were screened. The festival welcomed approximately 900 attendees over three days, creating a vibrant atmosphere where filmmakers from Japan and abroad engaged deeply with local audiences through cinema.

For its second edition in 2026, the festival continues to seek works from around the world that embody free, unconventional creativity and a deep love for cinema.

【映画祭概要】
栃木県大田原市出身の映画監督・渡辺紘文（大田原愚豚舎）によって設立された「栃木国際映画祭」は、地域に映画の灯を再び灯し、世界中の独創的な才能と栃木を繋ぐ文化の架け橋となることを目指しています。
2025年に開催された第1回大会では、メインの国際短編映画部門に世界20カ国以上から計146作品の応募が寄せられ、厳選された44作品を上映いたしました。また、3日間で延べ900名もの観客を動員し、国内外の制作者と地域の人々が映画を通じて深く交流する、熱気溢れる映画祭となりました。
第2回となる2026年度も、既成概念にとらわれない自由な発想、そして映画への愛に満ちた物語を世界中から募集します。

Awards & Prizes

Awards and juries for the Short Film Section at the Tochigi International Film Festival will be announced in early June.

Rules & Terms

Submission Regulations:

Running Time: Up to 20 minutes (including end credits)
Completion Date: Films completed after January 2024
Premiere Status: Applicants must clearly indicate premiere status (e.g., World, International, Japan Premiere) as well as screening and award history
There is no strict premiere requirement; however, premiere status may be taken into consideration during selection
Language: Non-Japanese films must include Japanese or English subtitles. Japanese films are strongly encouraged to include English subtitles
Rights: Copyright remains with the filmmaker

By submitting, filmmakers grant the festival the right to screen the film during the festival and to use materials for promotional purposes

Awards & Prizes

All films will be judged by a panel of domestic and international jurors. Awards include:

Main Awards:
Grand Prix, Audience Award, Jury Award, Best Director, Best Screenplay
Technical & Performance Awards:
Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor, Best Supporting Actress, Best Cinematography, Best Music
Special Awards:
Ohtawara Guto-sha Award (for works demonstrating originality and a free cinematic spirit)
Best Emerging Director
Tochigi International Film Festival Special Award
Others

*All submissions must be made online via FilmFreeway
*Selected filmmakers may be invited to attend Q&A sessions and stage appearances during the festival
*The festival will not respond to individual inquiries regarding selection results

作品応募要項

1. 応募規定
* 作品時間： 20分以内（エンドロールを含む）。
* 完成時期： 2024年1月以降に完成した作品。
* 上映経歴（プレミア規定）：
* 応募時にプレミアステータス（ワールド、インターナショナル、ジャパンプレミア等）、および過去の上映・受賞履歴を必ず明記してください。
* プレミア規定はありませんが、初上映作品は選考において考慮される場合があります。
* 言語： 日本語以外の作品は日本語または英語字幕必須。日本語作品は英語字幕付きを推奨。
* 権利： 著作権は制作者に帰属。映画祭期間中の上映権、および宣伝目的での素材使用権を主催者に許諾するものとします。

2. 重要スケジュール

* レギュラー締切： 2026年6月30日
* 選出通知日： 2026年7月31日
* 映画祭開催期間： 2026年9月19日(土) 〜 9月22日(火・祝)

3. 賞および審査 (Awards & Prizes)
国内外の審査員による厳正な選考を行い、以下の賞を授与します。
* 主要部門： グランプリ、観客賞、審査員賞、監督賞、脚本賞
* 技術・演技部門： 主演男優賞、主演女優賞、助演男優賞、助演女優賞、撮影賞、音楽賞
* 特別賞： * 大田原愚豚舎賞（独創的かつ自由な映画精神を感じさせる作品へ授与）
* 新人監督賞
* 栃木国際映画祭実行委員会特別賞 ほか

4. メイン会場
* 宇都宮短期大学 須賀友正記念ホール（栃木県宇都宮市下荒針町3829）ほか

5. 応募に関する注意事項
* 全ての応募は FilmFreeway を通じたオンライン提出のみとします。
* 入選作品の関係者には、映画祭期間中の舞台挨拶や質疑応答への登壇を依頼する場合があります。
* 選考結果に関する個別のお問い合わせにはお答えいたしかねます。

    For a first time festival, Tochigi nailed the most important aspects. The emphasis was in the films, the festival was really welcoming, and as foreigners we even got a translator to help us out as we attended a screening for a day as our film "Löylyy" was shown.

    Being away from all the shimmering lights of Tokyo, Ōtawara offers a refreshing venue for a film festival, and I encourage filmmakers to send their works here in the following years, so the festival can grow further on.
