About the Festival
The festival presents narrative, documentary, animation, experimental film, and screenwriting, with a focus on work that is socially aware, formally considered, and driven by clear creative intent.
Cinema at Thurrock is approached as a space for exchange. The programme brings together emerging filmmakers and established voices, creating a context in which different perspectives can meet, be questioned, and remain unresolved.
The festival does not prescribe a single viewpoint. Instead, it provides a platform where filmmakers can present their work in its own terms, allowing audiences to engage with complexity, contradiction, and lived experience.
⸻
2026 Edition
The 2026 edition marks a new phase for the festival.
All screenings and events will take place at Purfleet Heritage & Military Centre, a Grade I listed former Royal Gunpowder Magazine and one of the most significant historic structures of its kind in Britain. Recently recognised in the UK Parliament for its role in preserving local heritage, the venue provides a distinct context in which cinema is presented in dialogue with place, history, and public life.
This transition reflects a renewed focus on building a consistent, audience-facing programme within a defined cultural setting.

Who We Programme
We welcome submissions from filmmakers at all stages of their careers.
There is no house style, but we are drawn to work that demonstrates clarity of vision, strong authorship, and a considered approach to form and subject. This may include films that engage with social realities, explore identity and memory, or work within genre while maintaining a distinct creative voice.
We actively encourage submissions from underrepresented voices, including those facing barriers related to race, class, disability, gender identity, sexuality, and geography.
⸻
Awards and Recognition
Awards are determined by an appointed jury and reflect artistic craft, narrative strength, and cultural or social impact. Alongside the main competition awards, the jury may present discretionary prizes where appropriate.
⸻
Awards Ceremony
The festival concludes with an in-person awards ceremony, bringing together filmmakers, audiences, and partners to recognise the work presented during the edition.
