Rare by Design's The Film Festival gives people with physical and developmental disabilities an opportunity to express themselves on the BIG screen!

This event does not give out awards.

What is ‘The Film Festival’?

The Film Festival is South Dakota’s first ever local film festival ran by people with disabilities FOR people with disabilities. It’s put on by Rare by Design, a Sioux Falls-based nonprofit dedicated to creating awareness, inclusion and representation for individuals with rare diseases and disabilities. We seek films from all over the world to showcase talent on the big screen.

Who Can Enter ‘The Film Festival’?

For your film to have a chance at being screened, a person with a disability/rare disease must have a major role in your production either in front of or behind the camera. As long as your film meets those criteria, the festival is open for anyone to submit.

What Type of Film or Films Can I Submit?

We are currently accepting both short films (between 1 and 10 minutes) and feature-length films (between 10 – 30 minutes) to be screened at The Film Festival. Films can cover any subject matter and be any genre: Drama, Comedy, Documentary, etc. Anything, as long as you’re expressing yourself!

What Can I Expect at ‘The Film Festival’?

Films, of course! You’ll see the very best from filmmakers with disabilities/rare diseases in the region and around the world. You will have a chance to hear them talk about their films, ask questions, and meet them in person.

Who Can Attend ‘The Film Festival’?

The Film Festival is open to the general public. Tickets will be available for purchase in advance and at the door. Tickets are first come, first serve.

When is ‘The Film Festival’?

The Film Festival will take place on Thursday, September 19th at the South Dakota State Theatre in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Doors will open at 6 pm for a social hour, followed by an hour of short films at 7. After the shorts, there will be a 15-minute intermission followed by an hour of feature films.

How Do I Submit?

Just submit them through Film Freeway. Plus, it’s free to submit!
