The SOUND ON SCREEN film festival focusses on music subjects in film from around the globe - including narrative films with music related subjects, documentaries, musicals, concert films, short films - from mainstream to underground, and everything in between.

Established in 2010, Sound On Screen is the first and only event of its kind in South Africa (if not the continent), and no music genres are excluded with subject over the years including Pop, Rock, Metal, Punk, Rap, Hip-Hop, Breakbeat, Classical, Folk, Industrial, Techno, Jazz, Blues, R&B, African and Ethnic variations, Electronic and more, even including live soundtrack performance to classic silent films by The Makabra Ensemble.
Since the pandemic, getting cinema slots has been difficult, but all selections will be included in the on-line streaming chapter of the festival, and where possible, some titles may get cinema shows - Please note, if selected, a cinema slot cannot be guaranteed for your submission. If this is an issue, feel free to contact us.

The SOUND ON SCREEN film festival flowed from the 2nd Flamedrop X FEST event in 2008, which was an extreme music edition, and also included:

All official selections are acknowledged and certificates are allocated to a variety of category winners (eg. Best Feature Film, Best Short, Best Soundtrack, Best Documentary)

SOUND ON SCREEN feature- and short subject submissions can be live action or animation, but need to have a musical theme, eg.
a documentary on a band or musical artist (like God Bless Ozzy Osbourne),
a concert film (like Björk - Biophilia Live),
a musical (like The Rocky Horror Picture Show),
instrument-specific movies / documentaries (like African Drum - Beyond The Beat),
movies with a music-driven narrative (like Sound Of Noise),
a tour film (like Ministry: Fix),
movies / documentaries digging into music as a human subject (like The Heart Is A Drum Machine);
a documentary on a specific instrument (like The Whisper Of the Marimba)
a documentary of a specific music genre (Get Thrashed)
it can also be a narrative or documentary subject that is not necessarily music driven, but attached to a musical subject (like the Kurt Cobain death investigation of Soaked In Bleach).
Music videos and long form music clips are also accepted.

Productions submitted will be viewed by the selection panel, and if chosen will be awarded Official Selection status, and screened at the SOUND ON SCREEN Film Festival.
All selections will screen in the on-line chapter of the event with the selection of cinema inclusions up to the discretion of the festival panel and available slots at the cinema venue - these are not guaranteed.
Short Film entries will be compiled into feature length collection(s).

The festival cannot supply screening fees and any physical materials supplied (discs, drives, posters etc.) cannot be returned, unless at the cost of the submitter.

Since the pandemic, getting cinema slots has been difficult, but all selections will be included in the secure on-line streaming chapter of the festival, and where possible, some titles may get cinema shows.

There are no restrictions for the production's country of origin.

Flamedrop Productions, Cinemaniacs, and Sound On Screen cannot guarantee that the short- or feature films submitted will be selected and screened in public or on-line, as the festival selection members / committee will be the final arbiters.
Permission must be granted from the relevant rights holders (where applicable) of any copyrighted material used in your production (eg. music, film, video, news, audio, clips from other sources etc.), and the organizers of Sound On Screen cannot be held liable for the unlawful use of such material in submitted works.

We keep all personal information confidential and secure, and will not distribute it to third parties, commercial- or private interests. Some of the information submitted may be used in various Flamedrop Productions / Cinemaniacs / Sound On Screen online and print publications as promotion (eg. images, trailers, movie press information).
If you do not want any information you have included in this submission made publicly available, please notify accordingly.

This certifies that you have read and understood these conditions and grant Flamedrop Productions / Cinemaniacs / Sound On Screen the rights to publicly exhibit you submitted film/video production.

  • Thanks for the selection of IDEA - MINIATURES BY IMPROVISERS to Cape Town. They are open for improvised contemporary music, much appreciated! Unfortunately no cinema for festival screenings was available - any space would have been fine with me (for next time:-) So it took place online, mine geo-blocked within South Africa. I hope it went well...
