The inaugural SAN QUENTIN FILM FESTIVAL (SQFF) celebrates the work of current and formerly incarcerated filmmakers and will take place inside the prison on Thursday, October 10, 2024, with additional screenings on Friday, October 11. The mission of the SQFF is to normalize the inclusion of incarcerated and formerly incarcerated people in the entertainment industry to enable access to equal opportunities.

The Festival will include Narrative Short and Documentary Short Competitions with winners selected by an Industry Jury.

An Inside Jury of incarcerated people will judge a curated selection of Narrative and Documentary Features about the prison experience made by filmmakers who are not directly system impacted.

In addition to building a bridge between emerging filmmakers and the industry, the SQFF will offer guests a unique opportunity to interact with incarcerated filmmakers, attendees and residents. The SQFF highlights the transformative role arts and media training play in the prison system to create meaningful career pathways post-incarceration.

An incredibly meaningful and memorable festival experience particularly since my documentary deals with the impact of incarceration. The whole event was an impressive achievement!

  • This film festival has a purpose and a meaning that is even bigger than the movies selected and that won. It is to open eyes and to teach folks inside the prisons and outside. THIS is a project that I’ll support no matter what. The word is being spread by me personally about their event(s).
