Founded in 1997, the San Francisco Transgender Film Festival (SFTFF) builds a strong and diverse community through the power of transgender cinema. SFTFF is the world’s first and longest-running Transgender Film Festival, and co-presents year-round screenings in collaboration with other LGBT film festivals. Our programs strengthen awareness of transgender identity, history and culture, support emerging and established independent filmmakers working with transgender themes and provide a dynamic and inclusive forum for dialogue about local and global transgender issues.

I couldn't be there physically but my friends joined and sent me some videos and told me it was amazing! Thank you for screening my movie, It gave me a lot of courage to continue film making! As a trans, immigrant film maker who just made their first movie with almost 0 budget! I really felt as seen and now I'm telling everyone that "my movie was in San Francisco!".

Hopefully one day I can come and meet with you!

  • A beautifully run, sharply curated, genuinely welcoming festival.
The San Francisco Trans Film Festival was an absolute joy to be part of. The programming was smart, bold, and thoughtfully curated, representing a wide spectrum of styles, voices, and perspectives while still feeling cohesive and intentional. Every block felt alive with purpose.
Festival Director Shawna Virago was incredible—smart, generous, and truly welcoming. From the moment I arrived, she made me feel like a valued part of the community. The coffee meet-up with staff and fellow filmmakers was such a gift: an intimate, open space where we could connect, share work, and simply be with like-minded (yet wonderfully diverse) artists. It set the tone for the whole festival: supportive, grounded, and creatively electric.
The venue was packed for every screening I attended—audiences were excited, engaged, and deeply present. You could feel how much this festival means to the community, and how much care has gone into building that relationship.
I had the best time. This is exactly the kind of festival that reminds you why you make films in the first place. I’m grateful I was included, and I’d encourage any filmmaker to submit.

I've had two films presented by SFTFF and while sadly I've never been able to be there in person, it's always been an excellent experience.

  • We had such an incredible experience screening our film "House of Enigma" at this year's festival! The venue was gorgeous, the short film block was extremely strong and engaging, the audience was fun, and we got some great pictures! Can't wait to attend again in the future.
