An international film festival in Japan where cinema meets culture, community, and unforgettable experiences.
The Shinshu Suwa International Film Festival (SSFIFF) is an international film festival held in the scenic lakeside region of Suwa, Nagano, Japan.
Following its successful first edition, SSFIFF 2026 will showcase approximately 30 selected films, including short, mid-length, and feature works, from Japan and around the world.
All selected films will be screened in a professional cinema environment at Okaya Scalaza Theatre and other venues. Screenings will include stage greetings by directors, cast members, and filmmakers, creating opportunities for meaningful exchange between creators and audiences.
A signature highlight of the festival is the Red Carpet Ceremony, held along the scenic cycling road by Lake Suwa. Over 100 filmmakers, actors, and special guests are expected to attend, walking a red carpet approximately 100 meters in length in front of a large and enthusiastic audience. This will be followed by appearances on the Red Stage.
An official networking reception will also be held, providing a platform for filmmakers, industry professionals, sponsors, and local partners to connect and exchange ideas.
At the previous edition, the festival welcomed approximately 5,000 attendees and received submissions from over 30 countries, establishing itself as an emerging international platform rooted in community and cultural exchange.
SSFIFF aims to bridge local voices and global storytelling, celebrating films that explore themes such as regional identity, culture, and the relationship between people and nature.
Selected filmmakers from Japan will be invited to attend the festival, including red carpet appearances, stage greetings, and networking opportunities.
For international filmmakers, travel expenses are not covered; however, accommodation for one night will be provided (subject to festival policy).
