SF IndieFest is a founding member of the FILM FESTIVAL ALLIANCE

For 22 years the San Francisco Independent Film Festival has developed a great reputation for filling theaters, getting press, and throwing great parties. Films at our fest regularly get Variety reviews, picked up at other fests, and find rabid groupies following the makers around town demanding autographs and buying them drinks.

Our screenplay contest has the goal of expanding our filmmaker reach. We are very excited for screenwriters to participate in the festival and we promote them right alongside our films. Participants will enjoy live reads, parties, panels, film screenings and more!

A representative at United Talent Agency requested access to the scripts of the finalists of our 2019 competition.

Some feedback from competition participants:
"I believe you have identified my weaknesses that I have a difficult time seeing on my own,,, you did a nice job!" - Russel J

"...winning this festival helped me to secure a producer to finance the production of North Star...." -PJ, 2019 SF IndieFest Screenplay Award Winner

"I can’t thank you enough for your feedback and encouragement. Everything you’ve put in will help get this right. My experience is military and police work so I know breaking into the film world is tough so I appreciate everything you have gave me and I have the patience to get this right. " - Andrew K

"Thank you for the excellent coverage. Your notes are very helpful and well conceived. They are very much appreciated! It seems like most of the notes I’ve gotten simply tell me about my story- hence, not very helpful. The explanations and examples you provided really help steer me to a hopefully better rewrite. " - Tom F

"Really good coverage. Helps me out a lot." - Phil L

"This coverage is fantastic – insightful, constructive & specific. What a relief to have this "North Star” to guide me through my next draft. " - Helen K

"Thank you so much, what a great way to start 2020 - so glad I entered your competition!" - Dave K

"Amazing! This is incredibly helpful, particularly how detailed the notes were with regards to the character's motivations. To quote the writing partner : "Broo! These are fantastic notes!" Thank you so much for the in-depth deep dive, the suggestions are great and we've already scheduled a writing session to start implementing them :) The speedy turnaround was also impressive and very appreciated! " - David M

While I wasn't able to attend many events of the festival, SF Indie Fest was very communicative and friendly to me. Thank you so much!

  • We are proud to have our "Nanay's Lullaby" screenplay selected as a Semi-Finalist in this well-respected hometown festival - and impressed to be invited to the screenings as well. Thanks to Jeff and all at SF Indie!

I love this festival. I grew up going to it and seeing films there and it meant the world to me to be a finalist this year. I can't wait to submit again next year and this festival reminds me of old SF, and the best and most brilliant and independent parts of my home city.

Delighted to have been chosen as a finalist in this amazing festival. Sadly, due to filming commitments I couldn't attend, but the organizers passed on several fantastic script enquiries and were very communicative throughout the whole process. Many thanks!

The screenplay competition may be a newcomer, but SF Indie has been bringing great independent film to the Bay Area for a long time. The whole group (which runs several festivals throughout the year) is passionate...nay, unhinged about film. The festival and events hit a great balance between being well organized on the one hand yet also scrappy and intimate on the other.

The live screenplay reading and panel were interesting and well moderated. Communication from staff was excellent. And the fest is ideally located in San Francisco's Mission district. This isn't really a competition/fest for the old Hollywood networking dance, getting pitch meetings and so on (at least not yet), but that would have felt almost like it was going against the spirit of the thing.

My only regret is that I didn't have time to make proper use of my badge and attend more screenings!
